It turns out a trip across the monkey bars or a spirited game of four square can successfully boost kids\u2019 concentration, creativity, and contentment.<\/p>\n<p>Is it possible to replicate this result in real life, when most of us spend our days sitting at desks or in conference rooms? That\u2019s just one of the things that Lindsay Baker thinks about every day.<\/p>\n<p>Baker, the newly announced head of sustainability and wellbeing at WeWork, is passionate about how humans relate to their environments, especially at work.<\/p>\n<p>Baker has spent the majority of her 16-year career at the cutting edge of sustainable building. She was an early member of the team that built the LEED green building rating system, now in use around the world.<\/p>\n<p>This May, she joined the ranks at WeWork as head of sustainability and wellbeing, a newly carved-out title within the organization.<\/p>\n<p>WeWork\u2019s \u201cheart has always been in the right place when it comes to sustainability and health,\u201d Baker says, noting that co-founders Adam Neumann and Miguel McKelvey hit upon the idea of WeWork after starting an earth-friendly coworking company Green Desk.<\/p>\n<p>The technologist\u2019s professional journey has taken her to where she \u201ccan have a large-scale impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis company, more than any other I know, first and foremost needs to make great environments for people,\u201d Baker says. \u201cIt\u2019s our business. So my team is building the feedback loops and systems to ensure that our spaces are healthy and productive for all our members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She is organizing her team\u2019s work into three buckets \u2013 energy impact, materials lifecycle impact, and human health impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be driving down WeWork\u2019s energy consumption through design and operational changes [and] looking into carbon footprint reduction via renewables purchasing,\u201d Baker says, adding that materials will be sustainably sourced and a series of checks and balances will be put into effect to ensure ethical labor practices.<\/p>\n<p>Baker says the effort will involve the entire company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe could never get to our sustainability goals and vision if we were doing it within the confines of the sustainability team alone,\u201d Baker says. \u201cIt\u2019s very much an all-hands-on-deck attitude. Everyone has something to contribute.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Buildings impact people\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Armed with a master\u2019s degree and pursuing a PhD from the University of California Berkeley, Baker\u2019s curiosity stemmed from the recognition that buildings failed to provide flexible, sensitive solutions to accommodate the people inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got really into the ways buildings impact people,\u201d she recalls, completing her academic research inside public school settings, where she observed how the physical space impacted kids\u2019 ability to learn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need an active feedback loop for designers,\u201d Baker says. \u201cBuildings have fundamental impacts on health. But how do we make people healthier and happier?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the ideas that inspires Baker is biophilia, the idea that natural environments have health benefits that we can design into indoor environments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to be reductive about the concept,\u201d Baker says, explaining the addition of natural elements in indoor settings isn\u2019t as simple as \u201cputting plants in the office and calling it a day. It\u2019s about thinking about what it feels like to walk through a forest\u2014breezes, sounds, light, smell, patterns\u2014and bringing those indoors in creative ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/Lindsay_Baker_2.jpg?resize=1024%2C670\" alt=\"Lindsay Baker 2\" width=\"1024\" height=\"670\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The technologist\u2019s professional journey has taken her to where she \u201ccan have a large-scale impact.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Before she joined WeWork, Baker served as president of Comfy, an Oakland-based software firm. The company\u2014recently acquired by Siemens\u2014allows workers to control more of their workplace environment, including temperature, lighting, and meeting space.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly three years ago, WeWork became a client of Comfy\u2019s, and the rest, as they say, is history.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about whether people or the planet take precedence in her work, Baker says:\u201cYou can\u2019t optimize a system without first understanding the people who it serves, so we put together interventions to improve global health, but ones that are very people-centric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As an example, she wants to think carefully about recycling stations at WeWork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur stance is, design realistically,\u201d she says. \u201cMost people aren\u2019t going to spend time deciding where to throw a piece of trash\u2013\u2013it just has to be natural. We have to approach people where they\u2019re at and find what works for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the top of her to-do list is creating WeWork\u2019s sustainability program to redefine the model towards much higher impact..<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of programs are heavy on compliance checklists,\u201d she says. \u201cI get it. But most of us got into the world of sustainability because we wanted to solve big global problems, and we aren\u2019t getting there yet.
