The rest chose to wait.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fashion startup <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/someonesomewhere.mx\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Someone, Somewhere<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was visiting Naupan from Mexico City to strike up partnerships <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the local seamstresses and artisans, providing jobs and creating contemporary fashion that embraced traditional Mexican textiles.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Petra Secundino, 37, was one of the first to sign on. \u201cIt was totally unexpected for me to find something like this that allows me to work from home,\u201d she says. In many Mexican rural communities, women can struggle to find employment, either because of limited access to jobs or because of social pressure to remain at home. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secundino remembers the division of the community when the \u201cgroup of youngsters\u201d\u2014Someone, Somewhere\u2019s three 20-something cofounders\u2014came to the village to pitch the idea and how the balance began to shift. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe started with one order, then two, then three, then four,\u201d she says. \u201cAs we began ramping up with more designs, the friends, the cousins started being interested and asking to get involved.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/03\/Someone-Somewhere-backpack-571x667.jpg\" alt=\"Creator Awards winner Someone Somewhere celebrates authentic Mexican artisans\" class=\"wp-image-29916\"\/><figcaption>The traditional textiles find new life on modern products. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since starting out with those first five artisans, Someone, Somewhere has grown to employ 162 people across Mexico, providing much-needed income for its predominantly female workforce. Three thousand more have contacted the company asking to join.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Someone, Somewhere employs 162 people across Mexico, providing much-needed income for its predominantly female workforce.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mexico\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.mx\/fonart\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Fund for the Development of Arts and Crafts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> estimates that eight million artisans live in Mexico, a majority of them below the poverty line. Cofounder and CEO of Someone, Somewhere Jos\u00e9 Antonio Nu\u00f1o, 26, first came to the village from Mexico City as a teenager to volunteer with his friends.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAfter several years of volunteering, my partners and I decided to do something more sustainable for the community [after we graduated college,]\u201d Nu\u00f1o says. &#8220;We realized the levels of poverty and marginalization, but [also] the beauty of the crafts produced there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-29873 size-thumbnail\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/02\/Someone-Somewhere-label.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34980\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nu\u00f1o saw one potential reason for why so many artisans lived in poverty: They were producing decorative souvenirs that had been popular 30 years ago\u2014like sombreros and skull ornaments\u2014instead of products that resonated with today\u2019s market, such as T-shirts, sweaters, backpacks, and hats. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-29872 size-thumbnail\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/02\/Someone-Somewhere-Rosa.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34979\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pieces in the Someone, Somewhere line incorporate traditional textiles, like a woven patch on a T-shirt, a bold pattern on a pair of swim trunks, or a geometric shape stitched onto a denim shirt. Each item comes with a label naming the artisan and her community, creating a thread between creator and consumer.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fresh off a win at the Mexico City <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator-awards\/hear-us-roar-mexican-innovators-united-creator-awards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creator Awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a WeWork-sponsored competition funding ideas with impact, Nu\u00f1o says he\u2019s now ready expand, starting with Mexico\u2019s neighbor to the north, the U.S. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"empowering-with-income\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Empowering with income<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naupan is one of hundreds of rural villages in Mexico that lives off the textile industry because it\u2019s one of the only options besides agriculture.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Nu\u00f1o and his cofounders struggled at first to get a single artisan to join their vision in Naupan, they learned of the village\u2019s troubled history with outside partners.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOther designers had come to promise they would change the world for these women, even release their collections in New York,\u201d he says. \u201cSome women bought new looms and other equipment, but the people never came back.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Someone, Somewhere built up trust, artisan by artisan, who<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> started to see income from the partnership right away. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnce people saw we returned regularly, interest grew,&#8221; he says. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since production got underway in 2016, the company has sold between 5,000 to 8,000 T-shirts a year, along with around 3,000 sweaters, 2,000 hats, 2,000 backpacks, and 1,000 swimsuits. The company distributes the line via e-commerce and pop-up stores in Mexico City.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-29915 size-large\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/03\/Someone-Somewhere-pop-up-shop-display-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Creator Awards winner Someone, Somewhere employs Mexican artisans to create authentic textiles\" class=\"wp-image-29915\"\/><figcaption>Someone, Somewhere runs pop-up shops around Mexico City.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nu\u00f1o estimates that the company has at least tripled the income of the women they work with. One seamstress, Silvina Alvarez Flores, is paralyzed except for movement in her hands. Previously, Flores depended on her aging grandmother to take care of her. Now she brings in her own income, sewing from her bedroom.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We always seek to integrate those with the greatest need, such as single mothers or those from the poorest families,\u201d Nu\u00f1o says, adding that Flores has become the biggest earner in her family and is able to send her nieces and nephews to school.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-medium wp-image-29918\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/03\/Someone-Somewhere-hoodie-571x800.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29918\"\/><figcaption>Someone, Somewhere&#8217;s staff of 15 creates new hats and T-shirts based on current trends. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-medium wp-image-29917\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/03\/Someone-Somewhere-hat-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29917\"\/><figcaption>Every design is a collaboration between the villagers and the design team. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secundino echoes this, saying that she has also become the breadwinner in her household. She recalls some initial pushback from males in the community when the women started to earn their own incomes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSexism reared its ugly head,\u201d she says. \u201cBut the advantages of working from home, allowing women to still do what they need to do there, and of bringing in more money has convinced those who were opposed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"refining-their-style\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Refining their style<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen we started, we were only engineering students,\u201d Nu\u00f1o admits. \u201cWe had no idea about design.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He describes the company\u2019s first \u201cugly\u201d designs\u2014patches ironed onto pre-existing clothing. The team now includes 15 fashion, textile, and industrial designers who follow current trends and coordinate with the artisans. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A startup vibe permeates the company offices. Located in a converted residential bloc in Mexico City\u2019s hip neighborhood of Roma, the headquarters is half occupied by long tables covered in swatches of material. The glass walls of the meeting room are covered in marker scribbles, names of communities melding with items and deadlines. At the back, the trends laboratory is filled with racks of clothing and a gigantic sewing machine, which Nu\u00f1o says can crank out any new idea as quickly as possible. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe always release products in small quantities to test them out,\u201d Nu\u00f1o says. \u201cIf they work, we do more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"a-lesson-in-localization\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>A lesson in localization<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Someone, Somewhere has developed as a business, one of the biggest missteps came when they built a central workshop in Naupan with the idea of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serving as a base for the artisans to learn how to make products.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was a total failure,\u201d Nu\u00f1o says. \u201cThe women wanted to work from home and maintain their activities, such as cooking or childcare.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now when Someone, Somewhere works with communities across central and southern Mexico, the company strives to preserve the lives of the artisans. Local coordinators in each community, including Secundino, are in constant touch with Nu\u00f1o and ensure his team understands any local issues. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI still sew, but less and less, as my time is taken up by the coordination,\u201d Secundino says. Her duties regularly include accounting, distributing the workloads, ensuring quality control, and sending the goods to Mexico City.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"one-million-artisans\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>One million artisans<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-medium wp-image-29921\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/03\/Someone-Somewhere-sign-at-pop-up-store-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29921\"\/><figcaption>Someone, Somewhere will open a pop-up shop in Venice Beach, California, in 2018.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what&#8217;s next for Someone Somewhere? Nu\u00f1o says he\u2019ll capitalize on interest from the U.S., the source of 10 percent of the company\u2019s online traffic. This summer, the company will open a pop-up store in Venice Beach, CA. Over time, the store will test new concepts such as wallets, passport holders, and even surfboards designed with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cevichesurf.com\/about.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ceviche Surf Co<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">., fellow winners at the Mexico City <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/creatorawards.wework.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creator Awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nu\u00f1o believes that if demand explodes in the US, the number of women employed will skyrocket. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Our intention is to reach 1,000 artisans in the next year,\u201d he says. \u201cWe want to continue expanding dramatically. In the best scenario, we would eventually reach 500,000 to 1 million artisans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One million, following in the footsteps of just
