Their destination was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/ibn-gabirol--tel-aviv\">WeWork Ibn Gabirol<\/a>, where they were honing their reading skills with the help of staffers on the technology team.<\/p>\n<p>Once a week the kids met one on one with mentors who helped them with books they were reading. But for the last meeting, they ran the show. One girl sang a song that she had prepared, then everyone handed out bookmarks emblazoned with the word <em>toda<\/em> \u2014 Hebrew for \u201cthank you\u201d \u2014 they had made themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was really touching,\u201d says Hagai Levin, an engineering lead on the technology team in Israel who organized the program. \u201cYou could tell we had such a positive impact on them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About a year ago, the technology team at WeWork Ibn Gabirol felt that the time had come to give back to the local community. A group of them got together to toss around some ideas. They kept coming back to the importance of reading.<\/p>\n<p>After talking with several organizations, they decided to partner with one called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tovanotb.org\/about\/\">Tovanot Behinuch<\/a>, which translates as Insights in Education. It pairs elementary school children from disadvantaged backgrounds with mentors to focus on their literacy skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just about reading,\u201d says Levin. \u201cIt\u2019s also about building self-confidence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Orly Chen, head of the volunteer program at Tovanot Behinuch, says that the more than a dozen WeWork staffers were able to \u201copen a window\u201d for students struggling to read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kids chosen come from homes where Hebrew is not a native language, so they lack verbal and educational abilities,\u201d says Chen. \u201cReading out loud for them improves their confidence and self-esteem.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/WeWork_Israel_2.jpg?resize=1024%2C681\" alt=\"WeWork Israel 2\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">WeWork staffers said reading with young students was an &#8220;inspiring&#8221; experience.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Chen says that students also learned a lot by visiting the WeWork office, where they saw firsthand what the staff there did for a living.<\/p>\n<p>Sagi Isha, a software engineer for WeWork, says the learning experience went in both directions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was really impressed and inspired by my student,\u201d says Isha. \u201cDespite coming from a challenging background, she demonstrated a great wit and intelligence. It was a refreshing experience, and I gained insight into areas in life I&#8217;m not normally exposed to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isha, who helped coordinate the program, says getting to know the students has been a \u201crewarding experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Levin\u2019s team has already worked with two groups of students \u2014 both groups of 17, because that\u2019s all that will fit in the minivan. He says that when they leave for the 45-minute ride back to school, they\u2019re all smiles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re definitely going to do another round,\u201d says Levin. \u201cWe might even expand it to another building.
