As medics working in a harsh environment, they had found their mascot.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe were like this plant,\u201d J\u00fcnemann says. \u201cWe were there, where no other NGOs go.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They trimmed the name by two letters and created <a href=\"http:\/\/cadus.org\/\">Cadus<\/a>, a nonprofit specializing in mobile hospitals that can pop up in the most difficult conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEveryone said it wasn\u2019t possible to put a mobile hospital two kilometers from the frontlines in Mosul,\u201d J\u00fcnemann says. \u201cWe showed them it is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cadus: Providing Mobile Hospitals for Developing Regions | Creator Awards | WeWork\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/O9w5CpYoycA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cadus team, which won at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator-awards\/outside-the-box-innovators-feel-the-love-at-berlin-creator-awards\/?utm_source=wework&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=creator\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berlin Creator Awards<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/cities\/united-states\/new-york-city\/win-global-finalists-win-funding-creator-awards\/\">Creator Awards Global Finals<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, feels a special urgency now, as the refugee population continues to swell. In t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he last decade, the number of refugees has doubled from 32 million to 65 million worldwide, according to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/figures-at-a-glance.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UN statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">J\u00fcnemann, a paramedic since 1997, says his team developed its own mobile medical solutions when they saw that the existing options wouldn\u2019t work. They were too expensive, too delicate for tough conditions, and took too long to set up and take down\u2014a critical element when working near a frontline. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s where the team\u2019s second skillset comes into play. J\u00fcnemann and his cofounders met in Berlin\u2019s club scene, putting together giant music festivals such as Fusion, \u201cthe Burning Man of Germany.\u201d This burner-meets-medic crew understands the critical timing involved in loading in and out quickly, and can also get by with less sophisticated equipment when necessary. When they saw the $1 million price tag for mobile hospitals, they set out to build a low-tech, low-cost solution. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hospital\u2019s first use, in Mosul, staffed by volunteers from around the world, yielded positive feedback from the World Health Organization. Now the team is ready to build a second hospital. But constructing each hospital themselves isn\u2019t the goal for Cadus.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur aim is to develop a blueprint for mobile hospitals for small, medium, and large nonprofits in poor countries,\u201d J\u00fcnemann says. They think even the well-funded <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res\u200e<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Doctors Without Borders) could benefit from a lower-cost solution that would be more nimble in rough terrain.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For now, their reach is smaller, but no less impactful.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEach month, we have more than 1,000 patients,\u201d J\u00fcnemann says. \u201cAnd 300 people who would be dead now if we hadn\u2019t been there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While working out of mobile hospitals in Syria, Sebastian J\u00fcnemann and his team noticed a thistle-like plant called \u201cCarduus\u201d growing in the desert landscape.
