When the kids came back to school in the fall, educator Erica Buddington noticed them singing the catchy but profanity-laden hit in her classroom. Buddington seized on the teaching moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote twitter-tweet is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Rapped a map version of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BodakYellow?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BodakYellow<\/a> for my babies today. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/W9iJdzTtdP\">pic.twitter.com\/W9iJdzTtdP<\/a><\/p><p>\u2014 Erica B. (@ericabuddington) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ericabuddington\/status\/900880011158315009?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 25, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She went home that night, rewrote the words as a geography lesson, and printed out the lyrics as a homework sheet. When she performed the song the next day in class, the video went viral (including mentions on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.refinery29.com\/2017\/08\/170304\/geography-teacher-erica-buddington-bodak-yellow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Refinery29<\/em><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/teacher-remixed-bodak-yellow_us_59a6c999e4b063ae34da5364\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Huffington Post<\/em><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/rhoneshabyng\/2017\/09\/25\/stay-ready-bodak-yellow-teacher-erica-buddington-on-making-the-most-of-a-viral-moment\/#2119a8ca222b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Forbes<\/em><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), but more importantly, Buddington says her students retained what they learned.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you\u2019re teaching sixth graders that are six levels behind, you need more than just rigor for them to latch,\u201d she says. \u201cThey are so bright-eyed whenever they see something they recognize and can latch onto it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buddington prides herself on creating a culturally relevant curriculum, an approach that incorporates children\u2019s interests, learning style, and background into how material is introduced and taught. Wanting to help more educators steer away from rigid scripts, Buddington founded the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.langstonleague.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Langston League<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a team of educational experts who develop curriculum and train facilitators. The Langston League received a bump in recognition after Buddington\u2019s video and a recent win at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator-awards\/lets-hear-new-york-hometown-heroes-win-creator-awards\/?utm_source=wework&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=creator\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NYC Creator Awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe kids push me to be creative. They\u2019re my lab,\u201d she says. \u201cI take the kids\u2019 comments every day and rework it. They\u2019re so open when they know you love them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The kids push me to be creative. They\u2019re my lab.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"langstons-legacy\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Langston\u2019s legacy<\/strong><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buddington, a longtime devotee of Langston Hughes (\u201cMy mom used to read his poetry to me in the womb\u201d), used to make frequent visits to the poet\u2019s Harlem home on 127th Street, which was nearby her old workplace, the Harlem Children\u2019s Zone. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI used to have lunch on the steps there every day, trying to soak up some of his energy,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On one of these lunchtime visits, Buddington learned that Hughes had wanted ivy to grow on his brownstone, a way to signal that this was the home of a poet. No other home had ivy and the shaded area wasn\u2019t a good fit for the plant. Nevertheless, Hughes got the ivy to grow and it continues to cover his home today. Buddington felt the zing of inspiration.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat ivy was not supposed to grow in that part of Harlem,\u201d Buddington says. \u201cThis is a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>metaphor<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014for some kids! The ivy will rise to the sun.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"building-the-league\"class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building the league<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right now, the Langston League is in the first phases of an app that would deliver educational content based on an assessment of the child\u2019s learning style. Buddington wants to hire a part-time employee to help move it forward, and the $18,000 she received at the <a href=\"https:\/\/creatorawards.wework.com\/\">Creator Awards<\/a> will help her do that.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But even as she moves the Langston League forward, Buddington remains devoted to her students, her scholars. She says everyone around her knows one thing: \u201cErica is not available until 6 p.m., because that\u2019s kid time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When founder
