That\u2019s the word from the business leaders who gathered earlier this month for the first-ever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator-awards\/founders-find-their-tribe-at-first-ever-creator-camp\/\">Creator Camp<\/a> in Washington, D.C. The event brought together the regional finalists for WeWork\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/creatorawards.wework.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creator Awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, giving them a chance to chat with each other, meet one-on-one with mentors, and finesse their one-minute spiels for the global finals. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On hand at Creator Camp was a stacked lineup of experts, ready to share their advice. Here are their top five takeaways:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"1-be-authentic\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>1. Be authentic<\/strong><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Iafelice, cofounder of Humble Ventures: \u201cBeing authentic and open about your business works much better than people assume. In pitching and pitch decks, so much [fluff] can be built in to mask the true maturity and capacity of startups.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By being real, you get better feedback, better tailored areas to work on, and can build trust between your startup and the investment community.\u201d &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"2-remember-that-the-pitch-is-about-you\"class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <b>Remember that the pitch is about you<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stuart of Pitch DNA: <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have a love for and an aversion to slides. One thing I ask people to do that surprises them is to put in a blank slide so that you bring the attention back to you after you show the data. Why are you pitching? It\u2019s you\u2014not your slides. Think about the experience from the lens of the audience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"266\" width=\"400\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/DC-Creator-Camp-2017-do-what-you-love.jpg?resize=400%2C266\" alt=\"DC Creator Camp 2017\" class=\"wp-image-28558\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"3-get-comfortable-talking-about-your-startup\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Get comfortable talking about your startup<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeff Sheely, cofounder of UrbanStems: \u201cYou\u2019ve got to be passionate about your startup. This is something you\u2019re going to be talking about a lot for a very long time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"4-test-the-market\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>4. <\/strong><\/span><strong>Test the market<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Iafelice<\/span>:<b> \u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&#8217;s no way to know what sticks and what doesn&#8217;t until you test it in the market, and that&#8217;s what I encourage from any startups that I work with. Especially when it comes to storytelling, you have to observe the human behaviors of what happens when you tell your story (across all content mediums). Trying different methods to see what generates the best and most authentic responses from your target audience and replicating that over time is what really gets entrepreneurs moving in the right direction.\u201d<\/span><b> <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"5-show-versatility\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. <\/strong><b><strong>Show versatility<\/strong><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kathy Korman Frey, professor at George Washington University School of Business\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/business.gwu.edu\/research\/center-for-entrepreneurial-excellence-cfee?utm_source=wework&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=creator\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cInvestors like to see someone who\u2019s coachable.
