Three nonprofits in the WeWork creator community\u2014one fusing skateboarding with education, one led by a 20-year-old Nobel Laureate, and one empowering women with tech\u2014work to bridge the educational gender divide. Learn how they do it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-28639 size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"350\" width=\"525\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/1.-Skateistan_Press-Image_-Girls-Youth-Leaders-Crew-_Hamdullah-Hamdard-Kabul-1.jpg?resize=525%2C350\" alt=\"Skating girls in Afghanistan\" class=\"wp-image-28639\"\/><figcaption>Youth leaders in Kabul, Afghanistan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"skateistan\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Skateistan<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Oliver Percovich, founder and executive director<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.skateistan.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skateistan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the top winner at the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator-awards\/outside-the-box-innovators-feel-the-love-at-berlin-creator-awards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berlin Creator Awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, started in 2007 when Percovich, a lifelong skater, moved to Kabul, Afghanistan, for his wife\u2019s job and brought a few boards along with him. The hobby caught on quickly with the local children\u2014boys and girls alike\u2014and he launched a brand-new program: youth empowerment through skating and schools. Ten years later, the nonprofit with 80 full-time staff now runs schools (with skate parks) in Afghanistan, Cambodia, and South Africa. And, yes, Tony Hawk is a member of the board.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Why is skateboarding important for girls in Afghanistan?<\/b><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any of the sports that were happening, it was all boys. But somehow, the girls were skateboarding. It was a loophole: No one had actually thought to ban it yet. I jumped on that opportunity and I gave the girls more time on the skateboards than the boys, and naturally they became better skateboarders than the boys!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, there\u2019s a greater concentration of female skateboarders than anywhere else in the world. There\u2019s nowhere else in the world where 500 girls come every week to skateboard. And that\u2019s in Afghanistan, where girls can\u2019t play sports, where other NGOs find it really, really hard to work.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>There\u2019s nowhere else in the world where 500 girls come every week to skateboard. And that\u2019s in Afghanistan, where girls can\u2019t play sports, where other NGOs find it really, really hard to work.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><b>How do you keep the girls going to school?<\/b><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve always put way more resources in getting to that 50 percent girls mark. We have separate days for boys and girls in order to get the buy-in from the community. We provide transport for the girls to come and go from our skate school. We do home visits for the girls if they don\u2019t turn up to class and follow up with the families. We did over 1,000 home visits in Afghanistan last year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The girl that became the first female skateboard instructor was pulled out of school by her parents when she was 11 years old. The parents just needed money. They saw those two hours she would go to school as hampering her income-earning ability. So I made a deal with the parents where I made her a skateboard instructor and paid her $1 per session. The nonprofit, which has an office at\u00a0D.C.&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/dupont-circle--washington-DC\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WeWork Dupont Circle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, focuses on girls\u2019 secondary education in countries where most girls are out<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of school, such as\u00a0Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and countries which house Syrian refugees, including Lebanon and Jordan.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>What motivates your organization?<\/b><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malala is the youngest Nobel Laureate and well-known around the world. But she<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would be the first to tell you that awards and recognition mean nothing to her if they don\u2019t help girls go to school. We believe girls are our future leaders, creators, and self-starters. But 130 million girls are denied an education today.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>What\u2019s your approach?<\/b><br>The <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malala Fund wants to speed up progress on girls\u2019 education. To do this, we\u2019re investing in educators and activists working in countries where most girls are out of school.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local leaders are best-placed to identify and solve challenges facing<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">girls in their communities.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Local leaders are best-placed to identify and solve challenges facing girls in their communities.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><b>What\u2019s the impact so far?<\/b><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re in our fourth year of operations. Already we\u2019ve<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of girls. But there are millions more<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">out of school. Headquartered in New York City&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/studio-square--new-york-city--NY\">WeWork Studio Square<\/a>, the nonprofit just celebrated its sixth graduating class on October 4 with an event keynoted by WeWork Co-founder Miguel McKelvey<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>What do you do to get women to 50 percent in your classrooms?<\/b><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, we\u2019ve moved all our ad spend on Facebook and Instagram to target only women. Even though that costs twice as much, it\u2019s played a key role. I\u2019ve always made it my goal to get over the 50 percent level. With this last class that graduated, we had 60 percent. We made it an active, conscious choice, especially for underserved women in communities across New York City, like Far Rockaway.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cWe\u2019ve moved all our ad spend on Facebook and Instagram to target only women.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a small organization like us can pull it off, I see no reason why these bigger companies can\u2019t. It just takes someone within the organization to stand up and say, \u201cI\u2019m going to do this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Why did you choose to focus on women?<\/b><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women are more likely to finish the class and are more committed. You start to see the impact with their families. They can afford better apartments and buy cars.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>If a small organization like us can pull it off, I see no reason why these bigger companies can\u2019t.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><b>What happens when classrooms don\u2019t have an equal balance of men and women?<\/b><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When there\u2019s only one or two women in the class, they feel intimidated and guys start to hit on them. They feel much more comfortable knowing there\u2019s a support structure there for them. Their confidence grows when they\u2019re not the only one.
