One day he was doing an on-camera interview about <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bio-bean.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bio-bean<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the clean technology company where he serves as head of marketing and communication. The next, he was pitching his company at the London <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/creatorawards.wework.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creator Awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where he convinced the judges that the company\u2019s plan to turn coffee grounds into useful products was worthy of a $130,000 prize. Then came more interviews and a video crew shooting in his office. \u201cIt\u2019s been a dream week,\u201d Bage says. \u201cOne of the best of my career.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founded four years ago by entrepreneur <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/pictures\/mfg45jmhm\/arthur-kay-25\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthur Kay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, bio-bean collects thousands of tons of used coffee grounds every year (and by next year hopes to increase that to tens of thousands). It then transports them to a factory about an hour\u2019s drive north of London, where they are turned into two kinds of renewable fuels. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/10\/Tom-Bage-Headshot.jpg\" alt=\"Tom Bage of bio-bean\" class=\"wp-image-28504\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bage, formerly deputy director at Change.org, thought the idea sounded intriguing, so he joined the company. \u201cIt was the right fit,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m fired up by businesses with social missions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lately, the company has been working on another byproduct of coffee ground: coffee oil. It has dozens of applications, Bage says, from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beauty products (it&#8217;s full of antioxidants) to biodiesel (it can turn into a clean alternative to traditional fuels). Bio-bean is using some of the money from the Creator Awards to invest in the equipment needed to ramp up production.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCoffee grounds are a global waste problem because they usually end up in landfills. It\u2019s amazing that we can be part of the solution,&#8221; he says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI can&#8217;t give you an exact timeline on bringing it to market, but I can tell you that we have brought two brand new solid fuels to market, built an inbound supply chain, and constructed the world&#8217;s first coffee recycling factory in around four years,\u201d he says. \u201cWe&#8217;re moving quickly!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tom Bage says the past few days have been unbelievably busy\u2014a good kind of busy.
