{"id":28357,"date":"2017-09-25T17:13:08","date_gmt":"2017-09-25T21:13:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator\/?p=28357"},"modified":"2020-02-26T14:28:47","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T19:28:47","slug":"tiny-beetle-inspires-researchers-solve-worlds-water-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/member-spotlight\/tiny-beetle-inspires-researchers-solve-worlds-water-crisis","title":{"rendered":"Tiny beetle inspires researchers to solve world\u2019s water crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A tiny insect inspired four graduate students at London\u2019s Imperial College to try to solve the global demand for water. \u201cThere are animals, such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stenocara_gracilipes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fogstand beetle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Africa, that can draw water directly from the atmosphere,\u201d says Jonathan Risley, CEO of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thinairwater.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ThinAirWater<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWe thought: \u2018If animals can do it, why can\u2019t humans do it on a much larger scale?\u2019\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>The four of us wanted to address one of the three biggest problems humanity faces: the demand for water, food, and energy.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risley and his fellow grad students\u2014experts in biochemistry, biotechnology, and material engineering\u2014worked to come up with a membrane to mimic the beetle\u2019s shell. But their biggest innovation, one that they\u2019re patenting, is a protein layer that helps the membrane collect water more quickly and efficiently. How much water? Every day, a square meter of the membrane would be able to collect 26.8 liters\u2014that\u2019s more than 7 gallons. Their first application would be agriculture. The ThinAirWater team is already working with farms that could test the product\u2019s uses for irrigating crops starting in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The four of us wanted to address one of the three biggest problems humanity faces: the demand for water, food, and energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founded in 2016, ThinAirWater\u2019s research has attracted interest from others in their field. In March, they won second place in the Venture Catalyst Challenge, a program to test the commercial viability of early-stage science and tech projects. Since then, they\u2019ve won every competition they\u2019ve entered. That includes the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator-awards\/at-london-creator-awards-winners-vow-to-change-the-world\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">London Creator Awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where they took home an $18,000 prize. \u201cIt\u2019s great to get through to this stage,\u201d Risley says. \u201cWith this prize money, we\u2019re going to be able to start scaling up our technology.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Creator Awards, WeWork is committing more than $20 million to innovative projects and the people behind them.
