{"id":28093,"date":"2017-08-24T12:53:23","date_gmt":"2017-08-24T16:53:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator\/?p=28093"},"modified":"2020-02-26T14:23:13","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T19:23:13","slug":"producer-jared-ian-goldman-puts-his-own-stamp-on-indie-films","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/member-spotlight\/producer-jared-ian-goldman-puts-his-own-stamp-on-indie-films","title":{"rendered":"Producer Jared Ian Goldman puts his own stamp on indie films"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a screening of his latest film, producer Jared Ian Goldman was a little confused when his stepfather asked for help installing Instagram on his phone.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIs that what you took away from the film?\u201d Goldman remembers replying. \u201cBecause the whole message is that you probably <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>don\u2019t<\/em> <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">want Instagram on your phone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starring Aubrey Plaza, Elizabeth Olsen, and Billy Magnussen, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ingridgoeswestfilm.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Ingrid Goes West<\/em><\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a black comedy about a lonely young woman who becomes obsessed with the lives of a series of social media stars. After pepper spraying a bride who didn\u2019t invite her to the wedding (while simultaneously liking the posts from the ceremony), Ingrid steals another online celebrity\u2019s dog just so she can return it in person. Their subsequent friendship turns out to be a little like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Single White Female<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but much, much funnier.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some ways <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Ingrid Goes West<\/em> <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an odd project for Goldman\u2014\u201cI\u2019m not on Instagram,\u201d he admits, \u201cand I\u2019m not really on Facebook\u201d\u2014but it\u2019s the kind of character-driven indie film that have made him a sought-after producer. He\u2019s produced films featuring stars like Daniel Radcliffe in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Kill Your Darlings<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2013), Kristen Wiig in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The Skeleton Twins<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2014), and Woody Harrelson in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Wilson<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, released earlier this year. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-28096 size-full\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"439\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/Jared-Ian-Goldman.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28096\"\/><figcaption>\u201cWe work so hard to develop a story, so it\u2019s great to finally see the actors speaking the words,\u201d says producer Jared Ian Goldman.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also has an eye for hit projects outside of art house theaters. He was, for example, executive producer for the award-winning <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Loving<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on many \u201cbest films\u201d lists in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Ingrid Goes West<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> opened last Friday in a handful of theaters in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago, racking up impressive ticket sales. It opens at about 700 additional theaters across the country this week, a fact that Goldman points to with pride.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI can actually say that it\u2019s in a theater near you,\u201d says Goldman. \u201cThat isn\u2019t always the case for independent movies. It\u2019s nice to have one that is capturing the cultural zeitgeist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film debuted at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, where it picked up an award for screenwriting. It also found what Goldman says is the perfect U.S. distributor: Neon. Founded this year, Neon has already made a mark with films like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Colossal<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, starring Anne Hathaway.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you haven\u2019t seen TV ads for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Ingrid Goes West<\/em>, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that\u2019s part of Neon\u2019s strategy. All of its outreach so far has been online\u2014which is appropriate, given the obsession of the film\u2019s title character.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a pretty brilliant move,\u201d says Goldman. \u201cAlthough it means I haven\u2019t seen too many of the ads myself, since I don\u2019t do social media.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite his success in the film business, Goldman keeps a pretty low profile. He lives in New York, not Los Angeles. His office is at N.Y.C.&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/175-varick-st--new-york-city--NY\">WeWork 175 Varick St<\/a>\u2014the perfect location, he says, because it has a private screening room.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a great opportunity to do test screenings here in New York,\u201d says Goldman. \u201cAnd when I travel to Hollywood, I can use the screening room in that WeWork.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From start to finish, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Ingrid Goes West<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took just over a year to complete\u2014incredibly fast, even for an indie film. But even at that pace, Goldman was anxious to get it before an audience.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt felt so immediate,\u201d says Goldman. \u201cI hadn\u2019t seen anything else that talked about the consequences of putting our entire lives online.
