As someone who is equal parts filmmaker, photographer, and emcee, she definitely does not fit neatly into one box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she was recently described as an \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/jovanlandry.com\/\">interdisciplinary artist<\/a>,\u201d she thought the term was a perfect fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI really try to emphasize that a lot at first,\u201d says Landry. \u201cIt\u2019s who I am.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This idea of working across different platforms is what inspires Landry\u2019s newest project, <em>Synergy<\/em>, a hip-hop album created exclusively by women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is collaboration out there, but it\u2019s not like an album that\u2019s produced entirely by women,\u201d Landry explains. \u201cThere\u2019s always some male influence, especially behind the scenes. That\u2019s what will make this project stand out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/07\/Jovan-Landry-2-1-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27681\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Synergy<\/em> will be Landry\u2019s fifth album. In addition to her music, Landry has also done short films and music videos, in addition to concert shoots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI used to be really shy,\u201d Landry says. \u201cMy art has given me a voice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the project, Landry has already lined up an engineer, graphic designer, camera operator, and about 15 hip-hop performers. Now her main focus is finding the right producer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before winning at WeWork\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/creatorawards.wework.com\/\">Creator Awards<\/a> in Detroit\u2014and taking home a $36,000 prize\u2014Landry had debated funding the venture herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt first I was thinking about doing this project out of pocket,\u201d she says. \u201cBut now I can make it bigger and be able to do a tour and proper merchandise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Landry says she found out about the awards from a Chicago-based group for female entrepreneurs. That was two days before the deadline, but she finished her application and got it in under the wire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That weekend she got word that she was a finalist. Two weeks later, she was standing with the other nine entrepreneurs in her category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we got on stage, we were like, \u2018Oh my god, this is actually happening.
