For designer Anjali Purohit, it\u2019s quality over quantity and timelessness over trendiness. That\u2019s what her fashion accessory company, Variously<\/a>, is all about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe time taken to make these products is a lot more because they\u2019re all handcrafted,\u201d explains Purohit. \u201cI would rather try and take more time, but make them well so that even 10 years down the line they are not outdated. I want somebody to have it forever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born and raised in India, Purohit\u2019s heritage is reflected in her company\u2019s eye-catching textiles. The scarves and throws use traditional techniques like block printing, hand weaving, and shibori dyeing to create their unique look. They use natural dyes, so they\u2019re eco-friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey are ethically made, they are sustainable, and they are definitely a classic product,\u201d says Purohit, a Creator Awards<\/a> winner. She was one of 18 winners at the Detroit event, one of a series sponsored by WeWork<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purohit also works with artisans in India, Nepal, and other places to create materials that are not only beautiful, but use techniques passed down from generation to generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome of the weaving techniques are more than 1,000 years old,\u201d says Purohit. \u201cThere are very few people still using them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She helps artisans\u2014many of them women in rural areas\u2014learn these techniques so they won\u2019t be lost to the ages. The money stays in these communities, bolstering the local economy. All this makes the garments even more special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s no longer just a scarf or a throw,\u201d she says. \u201cThere is a genuine story behind it, and a genuine person who has a lot of skill to share behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
