Many of her friends were excited about getting more involved in the political process, not realizing that it was leaving them completely exhausted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yojo.co\/\">Yojo<\/a>, which \u201cbrings wellness to the workplace through yoga and meditation,\u201d says that no matter what your political persuasion is, when you\u2019re passionate about a cause it\u2019s easy to burn out if you don\u2019t pace yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like an airplane, where you have to put the mask on yourself first,\u201d Messina says. \u201cIf you want to change the world, first you have to take care of yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Messina was inspired to create a two-weekend&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yojo.co\/spring-training\">spring training course<\/a>&nbsp;where she\u2019ll \u201cgive people the tools to balance social activism and self care.\u201d It&nbsp;will be held April 20 to 23 and May 4 to 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll focus on simple and effective daily practices that will keep you going long after the training has ended,\u201d Messina says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not sure if it\u2019s for you? On March 16, Messina will host a free meditation event at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/fidi--new-york-city--NY\">WeWork 85 Broad St<\/a> . She says it\u2019s a great chance to meet her and hear more about the courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And for everyone else, Messina has some tips for getting through the next four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re in this for the marathon,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to pace ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Find time to recharge. <\/strong>\u201cStrength comes from getting grounded,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd getting grounded or centered comes from stillness and silence. Meditate, take a bath, or just put your phone on airplane mode for 30 minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Be strategic about where you get news. <\/strong>\u201cIt&#8217;s all too easy to mindlessly scroll down social media and be left with an information hangover,\u201d she says. \u201cBe selective about what sources you are using to be informed, and when and how often you are turning to them. If it helps, have a routine for when you are taking in news and try not to break it too often.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Give what you have.<\/strong> \u201cThere are so many opportunities to give right now,\u201d she says. \u201cYou can volunteer, go to protests, call senators, give money, or give time in other ways.&nbsp;Everyone is abundant in something. Giving this way keeps your own tank full and prevents you from feeling drained.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Find a sense of joy. <\/strong>\u201cYour joy makes the world a better place,\u201d she says. \u201cSo dance or watch <em>SNL<\/em> or go for a run or hug someone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Listen. <\/strong>\u201cOne of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself and the people around you is to listen,\u201d Messina adds. \u201cListen to people with different lives and different beliefs.
