She had to figure out its exact valuation and calculate how much funding she would request. And she had to perfect her pitch, anticipating any questions that might come from a wary group of investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After all that, Binderow still walked away without a deal. (She got an offer of $100,000 from Barbara Corcoran, but it came <a href=\"http:\/\/www.business2community.com\/entertainment\/shark-tank-nicepipes-apparel-walks-away-without-deal-despite-offer-barbara-corcoran-01756273#Zzow40KcO1QF0gtg.97\">with strings attached<\/a>.) But the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/soho-west--new-york-city--NY\">WeWork Soho West<\/a> member\u2019s glad she didn\u2019t miss out on the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-25016 size-full\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/01\/Lisa-Binderow-of-nicepipes-400x571.jpg\" alt=\"Lisa Binderow of nicepipes\" class=\"wp-image-25016\"\/><figcaption>\u201cThe biggest thing I got out of it wasn\u2019t getting a deal or not getting a deal,\u201d says Lisa Binderow. \u201cIt was feeling super proud of myself. It felt like climbing a mountain.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe biggest thing I got out of it wasn\u2019t getting a deal or not getting a deal,\u201d says Binderow, founder of the sportswear company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicepipesapparel.com\/\">nicepipes<\/a>. \u201cIt was feeling super proud of myself. It felt like climbing a mountain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Binderow and several other WeWork members who\u2019ve competed on <em>Shark Tank<\/em> all had the same advice for future contestants: the appearance on the show is just the beginning of the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been such a positive experience for us,\u201d says Michael Dweck, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/5th-ave--new-york-city--NY\">WeWork 5th Ave<\/a> member who pitched his company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.basicoutfitters.com\/\">Basic Outfitters<\/a> on a recent episode. \u201cThe reaction to our business and product post <em>Shark Tank<\/em> has been tremendous. The results have been so much greater than we ever anticipated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The takeaway is that anyone who appears on the show\u2014deal or no deal\u2014has to be prepared for the publicity that it will bring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brittany Hodak <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/city-guide\/what-i-learned-pitching-my-startup-on-shark-tank\/\">knows this first hand<\/a>. She and business partner Kim Kaupe pitched their business <a href=\"http:\/\/zinepak.com\/\">ZinePak<\/a> in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll get so much attention from being on the show,\u201d says the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/empire-state--new-york-city--NY\">WeWork Empire State<\/a> member. \u201cAbout 1 million clicked on our website between the initial broadcast and the rebroadcast. And every time in reairs somewhere, we see another bump in traffic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-25020\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/01\/Brittany-Hodak-and-Kim-Kaupe-of-Zinepak-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Brittany Hodak and Kim Kaupe of Zinepak\" class=\"wp-image-25020\"\/><figcaption>Brittany Hodak and Kim Kaupe saw their web traffic soar after they pitched their company Zinepak.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Predicting this, the entrepreneurs made sure to prepare for all the attention: their website&nbsp;didn\u2019t<em>&nbsp;<\/em>crash, and they&nbsp;didn\u2019t&nbsp;run out of stock of their major products. They avoided having to put out any last-minute fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe spent the night celebrating with everyone who had helped us get to this point in our business,\u201d says Hodak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your company has to be ready for the extra exposure, according to Dweck and Hodak. But so do you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKnow that you need thick skin for this type of thing,\u201d says Dweck. \u201cThere will always be haters, but as long as you know you put it all out there, you can feel great about your experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Binderow, whose company makes stylish arm and leg warmers out of the same material as yoga pants, says the road to <em>Shark Tank<\/em> began about a year ago. It was a Thursday afternoon, she remembers, and she was purging her inbox. She needed to take a break, so she filled out the show\u2019s online application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNever in a million years did I think they would actually call me,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd once they called me, I still couldn\u2019t believe it. I kept thinking at every step along the way, \u2018Is this really happening, or am I going to wake up?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The actual taping was nerve-racking for Binderow, who says she\u2019s more of an introvert. The lights, cameras, and crew made it an extremely stressful situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe biggest thing I got out of it was conquering this fear,\u201d she says. \u201cI didn\u2019t even know if I could get through my pitch. I felt like a different person the next morning when I woke up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The show\u2019s viewership of more than 5 million people heard the yoga teacher talk about making her own leg warmers after heading to class one frigid morning in just sweatpants. Her handmade items, which she called nicepipes, were a hit with students and instructors, so she decided to make it a business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being on a show like <em>Shark Tank<\/em> isn\u2019t for everyone, Binderow admits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re ready to be the most vulnerable in your entire life, you should go for it,\u201d Binderow says. \u201cThis was the most exposed and scrutinized I\u2019ve ever felt. My husband and friends and family have been amazingly supportive over the last couple of months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her episode, which aired on January 13, has already transformed her business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe insanity that follows up is intense,\u201d she says. \u201cThere are definitely moments when you wake up and wish you could have a normal day.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For Lisa Binderow, the \u201cmost intense process I\u2019ve ever gone through in my life\u201d was appearing on Shark Tank.
