It\u2019s not that Nicola Black was itching to strike out on her own. The work she was getting was interesting enough, from doing production for a major newspaper to creating posters and DVD box art for a film and entertainment company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would see some of my work in Blockbuster\u2014when it was still around,\u201d says Black.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She even had the opportunity to create film festival program guides, ads, and marketing campaigns helping to tap into new markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI realized I had a flair for this thing, and I wondered, \u2018Why am I not doing this for other people?\u2019\u201d says Black. \u201cI had the itch to start my own business and work with a bunch of different clients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So she founded Nicola Black Design, LLC<\/a>, a full-service graphic design company which currently specializes in identity and branding design. First thing she had to do\u2014and quickly\u2014was build up a roster of clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wrote down the names of all the people I knew, and the people who I knew would need me,\u201d Black says. \u201cAnd I just let people know I\u2019m available for contract work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Especially when she was starting out, social media was her \u201cbest friend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI started with keyword searches of people looking for wedding invitations, of all things, and reached out to them,\u201d Black says. \u201cIt\u2019s part of the hustle to look for work by seeing what people are talking about and then putting your hat in the ring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also stays active in the creative community, serving as the Freelancers Union Philadelphia\/South Jersey Spark<\/a> leader as well as director of South Jersey Creatives<\/a>. A member of Philadelphia\u2019s WeWork 1601 Market<\/a>, she invites freelancers to the space the first Wednesday of every month to discuss topics like how to deal with difficult clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a fun way for me to keep in touch with my fellow creatives and build community,\u201d Black says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At another event sponsored by a WeWork member, she started talking with a woman who noticed Nicola\u2019s name tag read \u201cgraphic design professional.\u201d The woman contacted her the next day to talk about a big branding project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe told me her story, and I said, \u2018I can totally help you,\u2019\u201d says Black, who has 16 years of experience in the industry. \u201cShe booked me for a full branding project that runs through February.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lot of people come to Black for advice on how to stay afloat as a freelancer. And though she doesn\u2019t have all the answers, she says she\u2019s been able to share her experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI come from the creative world, where some people aren\u2019t interested in sharing technical knowledge or their successes and failures in business, and it\u2019s so detrimental,\u201d Black says. \u201cI\u2019ve learned along the way that sharing knowledge with upcoming designers\u2014showing them the ropes, and letting them know they can do this, and sharing with the community\u2014has been incredibly important for my growth and theirs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
