Made with the highest quality materials available and assembled by skilled craftspeople, these casual shoes will last you many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I spent a lot of years working in footwear in Europe,\u201d says OneGround&#8217;s Eamon Walsh. \u201cI learned from being right in the factory. I learned design, production, distribution, and sales. It was like going to graduate school in footwear.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a look around his design studio at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/dumbo-heights--new-york-city--NY\">WeWork Dumbo Heights<\/a>, where you\u2019ll notice the scent of leather in the air. There are more than 500 samples of leather on the shelves, because choosing just the right materials is how Walsh\u2019s company \u201cdelivers on the promise of the brand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUp on the walls are drawings of about 50 images of different models of shoes we\u2019re working on,\u201d says Walsh. \u201cWe probably do 30 to 50 different designs every year, with four to six of them actually going into production.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/01\/OneGround-2-1-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"OneGround\" class=\"wp-image-24949\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/01\/OneGround-3-1-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"OneGround\" class=\"wp-image-24951\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The only part of the process that isn\u2019t done in Walsh\u2019s studio is the construction, which is done by hand in Alicante, Spain. The craftspeople have been in the business for generations.Walsh sends them a step-by-step design process via <a href=\"https:\/\/products.office.com\/en-us\/powerpoint\">Microsoft PowerPoint<\/a>. But also integral to the process is what is called a \u201ctape up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s an existing shoe that we cover with masking tape,\u201d says Walsh. \u201cIt\u2019s like the most intensive arts and crafts project you can imagine. On the tape we write things like \u2018move the toe box up,\u2019 or \u2018move the trim two centimeters down.\u2019 You\u2019d be surprised how little things like that can change how a shoe is perceived.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/01\/OneGround-4-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"OneGround\" class=\"wp-image-24940\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/01\/OneGround-5-1-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"OneGround\" class=\"wp-image-24947\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s not the end of the process. For special edition shoes designed by local artists, the finishing touches are done back in Walsh\u2019s studio.Walsh got into the business after reconnecting with some friends from college. They had returned home to Italy and Turkey, where their families owned shoe factories. Walsh says their \u201cgrand plan\u201d was to convince him to use his business expertise to help them expand their companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI spent a lot of years working in footwear in Europe,\u201d says Walsh. \u201cI learned from being right in the factory. I learned design, production, distribution, and sales. It was like going to graduate school in footwear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in the U.S., Walsh saw a gap in the shoe market. More comfortable clothes weren\u2019t just saved for Casual Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/01\/OneGround-6-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"OneGround\" class=\"wp-image-24943\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/01\/OneGround-7-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"OneGround\" class=\"wp-image-24944\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we wear in the workplace is shifting,\u201d says Walsh. \u201cLots of executives at emerging businesses no longer wear a dress shoe to work. And neither are the people working for them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same, consumers started looking for shoes that were both stylish and well made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen a complete 180 degree reverse from consumption that was part of the \u2018fast fashion\u2019 trend,\u201d says Walsh. \u201cThey don\u2019t want to have 20 pairs of shoes in the closet\u2014maybe just two to three. And these are the ones they they\u2019ll wear every day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the market Walsh is targeting. And the response, he says, has been overwhelming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to push the limits of what you think of footwear,\u201d says Walsh. \u201cWe\u2019re doing it with an aesthetic
