Since he wasn\u2019t getting an allowance, he started his own origami business. The 9-year-old quickly found a market among his peers on the playground. Fascinated, they dug out their lunch money to buy paper stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen the kids at school saw them, they wanted them because they didn\u2019t know how to make them,\u201d says Galindo, who grew up in Colombia. \u201cOnce I sold out of my paper stars, I saved the money and opened my first savings account. Back then, $30 was enough to open a savings account.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was Galindo\u2019s entry into the finance world. About 20 years later, he would start <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moneymio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MoneyMio<\/a>, the \u201conly bilingual website dedicated to empowering Latinos with personal finance education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/Jose-Galindo\u2019s-Financial-Education-Kicked-Off-on-the-Playground2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"jose-galindos-financial-education-kicked-off-on-the-playground2\" class=\"wp-image-24701\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Galindo went on to study economics and finance in the U.S. His aunt, who was a professor at UCLA, took him in so that he could get an American education. Ready for his first internship, he landed an interview at Merrill Lynch. There he was asked a hard-hitting question: \u201cAre you ready to work as hard as we work?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Galindo began to doubt his abilities, assuming his colleagues would come from privileged backgrounds and have Ivy League educations. But he decided not to let that stop him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey gave me the internship,\u201d says the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/new-york-city\/irving-place\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Irving Place<\/a> member. \u201cWhen I got hired, they said they were impressed by my work ethic. A year later, they gave me a full-time offer, so I joined them for one year, building all the business models as an analyst and learning about the technical aspects of banking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/Jose-Galindo\u2019s-Financial-Education-Kicked-Off-on-the-Playground3-400x571.jpg\" alt=\"jose-galindos-financial-education-kicked-off-on-the-playground3\" class=\"wp-image-24702\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Galindo\u2019s idea to launch a finance-focused startup came from his years as an investment banker on Wall Street. He wanted to make the information he learned there more readily available. He remembers helping one friend cut her monthly student loan payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI walked her to the bank and got the loan processed in less than an hour,\u201d Galindo says. \u201cShe saw how her monthly payment dropped by 30 percent, and she started to cry, asking, \u2018How can I thank you?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Galindo realized he was onto something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a huge market in the U.S. that is vastly underserved,\u201d Galindo says. \u201cThat\u2019s when I thought, \u2018This is it. I can combine finance, tech, and my cultural background and help my community.\u2019 It was a nice way to connect the dots and create something that has value and purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MoneyMio helps people learn about their personal finances and teaches them the importance of opening savings accounts and building their credit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne problem in the Latino community is they don\u2019t have any credit history or they have made some mistakes,\u201d Galindo says. \u201cOnly 26 percent of Hispanics in the U.S. have savings in a retirement account. It\u2019s a matter of making a lot of the information available in their language.
