{"id":24396,"date":"2016-11-18T00:59:41","date_gmt":"2016-11-18T05:59:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/?p=24396"},"modified":"2020-04-03T16:15:44","modified_gmt":"2020-04-03T20:15:44","slug":"sequined-sun-hat-turned-born-made-fashion-must","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/member-spotlight\/sequined-sun-hat-turned-born-made-fashion-must","title":{"rendered":"A sequined sun hat turned Born + Made into a fashion must-have"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Last month, Jackie Dew was on the brink of a very special victory. \u201cI\u2019m sure big brands don\u2019t focus on these types of things, but we\u2019re about to hit 5,000 followers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bybornandmade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on Instagram<\/a>,\u201d reveals the New York-based founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bybornandmade.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Born + Made<\/a>, a women\u2019s apparel and accessory line. (The brand is now edging closer to 6,500 followers.) This is a big win, especially considering that prior to forming her company, Dew shunned the Internet for as long as possible. \u201cI wasn\u2019t into social media,\u201d she explains, \u201cand it was really foreign to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps Dew\u2019s fashionably late arrival is what\u2019s making Born + Made resonate so quickly and deeply\u2014she recognizes that each follower is a loyal customer and that each post is a chance to not only inspire, but show her gratitude. Later that same day, she posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BLhNOZ7DGZ1\/?taken-by=bybornandmade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a photo<\/a> of herself holding a bottle of champagne while wearing a signature Born + Made floppy sun hat. Cursive letters across the front read: \u201cThank you 5,000.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/A-Sequined-Sun-Hat-Turned-Born-Made-into-a-Fashion-Must-Have2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"a-sequined-sun-hat-turned-born-made-into-a-fashion-must-have2\" class=\"wp-image-24401\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019d think Dew would have seen some of this success coming, especially given her background. The 33-year-old Boston native grew up in a family of entrepreneurs, her parents owning several businesses separately and together. \u201cFrom when I was five to when I had left for college, every night at dinner we\u2019d be discussing things with their businesses,\u201d says Dew. \u201cIt\u2019s just always been a part of the fam.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And she soaked it all up. \u201cI had a lot of startup businesses,\u201d she recalls. While studying history, political science, and business at Northwestern, \u201cI would do things like paint houses, which is a bit random, but I literally did that for probably five to 10 years as a side business to get extra cash.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before and after getting her MBA at Harvard, Dew focused on private equity and venture capital. \u201cI moved through the ranks there,\u201d she says, \u201cbut always liked working directly with the companies that we invested in. My main focus was on consumer retail brands, and I would always\u2014in addition to doing the typical finance stuff you do\u2014do projects with them and get hands-on experience in the real operations of the business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/A-Sequined-Sun-Hat-Turned-Born-Made-into-a-Fashion-Must-Have3-400x571.jpg\" alt=\"a-sequined-sun-hat-turned-born-made-into-a-fashion-must-have3\" class=\"wp-image-24402\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This led to her becoming CEO of several businesses both large and small, from a health and wellness brand on the West Coast to a local blow-dry chain in Boston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI ran a couple other companies,\u201d Dew says, \u201cbut I really wanted to be doing it for myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched in May, Born + Made gives Dew the opportunity to be working in an industry that she finds both exciting and relevant to her daily life: fashion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t love working in industries that\u2019s stuff that I don\u2019t buy, or don\u2019t consume, or don\u2019t think about on a daily basis,\u201d she explains. \u201cI really wanted to be in an area where I got the people who were buying, and I understood how they purchased and why they purchased and what they were looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born + Made specializes in affordable clothing and accessories that can be customized\u2014like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bybornandmade.com\/collections\/limited-edition-fashion-hats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fashion hats<\/a>, a hit for bridal and bachelorette events. What Dew wrote off as merely a summer item (since they are perfect for the beach) soon became the brand\u2019s most popular product year-round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople feel some personal connection to getting a hat with their name or their saying on it, and they appreciate that it\u2019s handmade and well made,\u201d says the&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/nomad--new-york-city--NY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork NoMad<\/a> member. \u201cWe have a lot of brand loyalty that\u2019s created out of those hats.
