Author Jenny Blake says you first have to &#8216;plant&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cIf change is the only constant,\u201d says author <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jennyblake.me\/\">Jenny Blake<\/a>, \u201cthen let\u2019s get better at it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is how Blake concludes the introduction to her second book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Pivot-Only-Move-That-Matters\/dp\/1591848202\"><em>Pivot: The Only Move That Matters Is Your Next One<\/em><\/a> (Penguin Portfolio)<em>. <\/em>This line is also a microcosm of how the entire book takes form: motivation to accept life\u2019s challenges and become a better, more fulfilled person because of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPivot\u201d is a four-step method that Blake developed for people (and organizations) to navigate change. To make big personal decisions\u2014changing careers, moving to a new city, changing careers <em>and <\/em>moving to a new city, or launching a business\u2014<em>Pivot <\/em>is a manual to do so as successfully as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-23698 size-full\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"408\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/Jenny_Blake.jpg?resize=300%2C408\" alt=\"Jenny Blake\" class=\"wp-image-23698\"\/><figcaption>\u201cIf change is the only constant,\u201d says author Jenny Blake, \u201cthen let\u2019s get better at it.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One of Blake\u2019s first jobs was in the People Operations department at Google; Blake eventually worked in a career development capacity, coaching Google employees around their career goals. Blake made a major life pivot when she left Google HQ in California to move to New York City and start her own career development coaching practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t all smooth sailing, and Blake has an \u201copen kimono\u201d approach to talking about the experience\u2014the anxiety, the income insecurity, the money. But once she was able to align her life, she uncovered another calling: developing the \u201cPivot\u201d method and teaching it to her clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blake\u2019s \u201cPivot\u201d method is made up of four parts: Plant, Scan, Pilot, and Launch. Blake makes an apt sports analogy to describe how she named these stages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn basketball, a pivot refers to a player keeping one foot firmly in place while moving the other in any direction to explore passing options. Much like a basketball player, successful pivots start by <em>planting<\/em> your feet\u2014setting a strong foundation\u2014then <em>scanning<\/em> the court for opportunities, staying rooted while exploring options. Scanning alone will not put points on the board, so eventually you start passing the ball around the court\u2014testing ideas and getting feedback, or <em>piloting<\/em>\u2014generating perspectives and opportunities to make a shot\u2014eventually <em>launching<\/em> in a new direction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I found most powerful about <em>Pivot<\/em> was the amount of time Blake devoted to the \u201cPlant\u201d stage. She explained her reasoning to devote so much real estate in her book to planting: when you\u2019re about to make big changes in your life, first you need to anchor into what\u2019s currently working. The constants in your routine, and your physical and emotional well-being, will be your bedrock when you need comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Blake makes the case that most new career skills and opportunities aren\u2019t \u201cout there.\u201d You probably have a lot of information that you need already inside of you, as you\u2019re planning your next move. She provides exercises to explore your values, skills, and \u201chappiness formula\u201d\u2014all things that can change your life, before you actually change <em>anything.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Pivot<\/em> made me slap my forehead. After reading Blake\u2019s thorough instructions for a successful Pivot, I could so clearly see why I fell flat on my face during a Pivot I tried to execute in my mid-twenties. I am currently in the middle of another pivot, and now the pages of my copy of <em>Pivot <\/em>are inked with underlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, <em>Pivot <\/em>is a fun book. Blake has an engaging, high-energy voice. She\u2019s candid about how scary it can be to go after your dreams, and she\u2019s emphatic that it\u2019s vital to do so anyway, if you want to live a full life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She writes, \u201cOur impulse is to tuck our tail between our legs and turn away. Or stuff the dreams down and pretend we never had them in the first place. But the fears that ride in on the coattails of an invigorating vision are a <em>good <\/em>sign. They signal that you are approaching something meaty enough to challenge you, and that you are squarely in your stretch zone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it feels like the time to make a change, but you\u2019re feeling some agita\u2014don\u2019t let panic stop you from doing what you love.
