The founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proudpour.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Proud Pour<\/a> was hurrying from New York to Boston with 638 oyster shells in two bags slung over her shoulders. While running down the steps in Penn Station with only minutes to catch her train, the bags ripped open and shells flew everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the verge of tears, Kelly recalls thinking: \u201cIt\u2019s too hard. I can\u2019t do this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the next 10 days, Brian Thurber\u2014who has a legal and environmental studies background, as well as a penchant for coding\u2014went from Kelly\u2019s advisor to her full-time business partner and co-CEO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/08\/The-World-Is-Berlin-Kelly\u2019s-Oyster-and-with-Proud-Pour-She\u2019s-Saving-Millions-of-Them2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"The World Is Berlin Kelly\u2019s Oyster (and with Proud Pour She\u2019s Saving Millions of Them)2\" class=\"wp-image-23109\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was just kind of amazing how the universe was like, \u2018You need help?\u2019\u201d says Kelly, who holds business management and accounting degrees from the University of Southern California\u2019s Marshall School of Business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/new-york-city\/williamsburg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Williamsburg<\/a>, Proud Pour is a company that pairs alcoholic beverages with important environmental causes, allowing consumers to say \u201ccheers to change.\u201d Founded in 2014, the company\u2019s first product is a North Coast sauvignon blanc dubbed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.proudpour.com\/wines\/the-oyster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Oyster<\/a>.\u201d Every time you buy a bottle\u2014which comes with a decorative oyster shell that contains a handwritten&nbsp;note&nbsp;by Kelly\u2014100 oysters are restored to local waters. To date, Proud Pour has partnered with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billionoysterproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Billion Oyster Project<\/a> and other nonprofits to restore 2.8 million oysters, over 1 million of those being in New York Harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon there will be a red wine that will help support bee colonies. Then what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/08\/The-World-Is-Berlin-Kelly\u2019s-Oyster-and-with-Proud-Pour-She\u2019s-Saving-Millions-of-Them3-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"The World Is Berlin Kelly\u2019s Oyster (and with Proud Pour She\u2019s Saving Millions of Them)3\" class=\"wp-image-23110\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA beer for beavers, and maybe a vodka for bats, and a whiskey for wolves\u2014all these keystone species that really need attention,\u201d says Kelly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelly wants Proud Pour to be the first company to span wine, beer, and spirits, while also making all these beverages without chemical additives. Or, as she puts it: \u201cWhy don\u2019t we make it a pure, really amazing, delicious, good-for-you beverage, and just use the ingredients that these keystone species interact with and really engage with these species?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2012, Kelly got involved with the New York City Homebrewers Guild and learned how to make beer, wine, cider, and kombucha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/08\/The-World-Is-Berlin-Kelly\u2019s-Oyster-and-with-Proud-Pour-She\u2019s-Saving-Millions-of-Them4-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"The World Is Berlin Kelly\u2019s Oyster (and with Proud Pour She\u2019s Saving Millions of Them)4\" class=\"wp-image-23111\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had been working in real estate development for a multinational company,\u201d says Kelly. \u201cI just wanted to do something that would make a difference in a positive way on the world. That\u2019s always been my goal, and I realized very quickly that that wasn\u2019t happening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelly had her sights set on the alcohol industry, but didn\u2019t want to \u201ccreate just another product,\u201d she explains. \u201cWe have plenty of products out there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, she wanted to drink to \u201csomething more interesting, rather than this-is-just-a-drink. Like why isn\u2019t there a Toms shoes of the alcohol industry?\u201d she asks while wearing black Toms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/08\/The-World-Is-Berlin-Kelly\u2019s-Oyster-and-with-Proud-Pour-She\u2019s-Saving-Millions-of-Them5-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"The World Is Berlin Kelly\u2019s Oyster (and with Proud Pour She\u2019s Saving Millions of Them)5\" class=\"wp-image-23112\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After Googling \u201coyster problems\u201d and \u201cenvironmental problems,\u201d she discovered the startling information she needed to form a business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve lost like 85 percent of our world\u2019s oyster reefs,\u201d Kelly says. \u201cAnd New York used to have trillions of oysters. It was the hub, the headquarters, of oysters in the world, and it\u2019s all gone. When it was here, it was key and essential to everyone\u2019s lives\u2014from jobs, to water, to local fish, to protection from flooding, to just having a life by the sea that we don\u2019t have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Proud Pour, the 30-year-old entrepreneur has truly discovered her means of making a difference. Not only has she found a fun and interesting way for consumers to help the environment, but she\u2019s taking it one step further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPart of my thing with Toms shoes is it\u2019s wonderful, but I also will never see these children\u2014it\u2019s only two pictures,\u201d Kelly explains. \u201cWith what we\u2019re doing, we have all these local projects where you can see your work.
