But Maury isn\u2019t stressed one bit about how this will affect her business. In fact, the glass-half-full insurance broker says she feels \u201camazing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThose are my least productive hours of the day anyway,\u201d she laughs. \u201cAnd I\u2019m thinking about it as my legal internship for the summer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Known as one-half of the creative force behind Brooklyn-based startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/personal-profiles\/transforming-grand-opera-into-an-intimate-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LoftOpera<\/a>, the 26-year-old entrepreneur is also the co-founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royceinsurance.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Royce<\/a>, a company that helps small businesses navigate their insurance options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of my passions is making insurance really accessible to both women and millennials,\u201d says the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/new-york-city\/dumbo-heights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Dumbo Heights<\/a> member. \u201cI feel like people my age, or even a little bit younger, see insurance as a field for soulless financiers, which it is not. One of my huge goals for this company is to change the way people think about insurance. It\u2019s actually a really beautiful, fascinating, and human-centric field.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the company\u2019s name, it refers to Maury\u2019s 93-year-old friend Royce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/08\/Expert-Advice-Brianna-Maury\u2019s-Top-3-Tips-about-Business-Insurance2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Expert Advice- Brianna Maury\u2019s Top 3 Tips about Business Insurance2\" class=\"wp-image-23021\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe is the toughest and most brilliant person I know,\u201d says Maury. \u201cShe moved to the city in the \u201940s as a fashion designer. She is one of those epic New York women who only wears black. She sends emojis now too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below, Maury shares her best advice for small business owners shopping for insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> <strong>Think ahead.<\/strong> \u201cThe truth is that everyone who runs their own business thinks that nothing bad will ever happen to them, but that is very not true,\u201d says Maury. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t even need to be a high limit, but everyone needs general liability because even as an Etsy store owner, for example, if you sell a faulty product and it ends up hurting someone, Etsy will not be held liable. You will.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Consider your employees.<\/strong> \u201cYou really do need some sort of corporate governance structure, even when you only have five to 10 employees,\u201d says Maury. \u201cA lot of small companies I\u2019m seeing are making huge mistakes that are opening them up to employment practice liability problems. If you fire someone without putting them on a plan before you fire them, or you fire someone that was pregnant and you didn\u2019t know they were pregnant, you can be really open to a lawsuit and get in big trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Talk to a broker.<\/strong> \u201cFor venture-backed companies\u2014I know I meet a lot of them in WeWork\u2014every time you go to raise a round, your venture capitalist is going to ask you to get directors and officers insurance,\u201d says Maury. \u201cGeneral liability pretty much works across the board because it\u2019s a very standard policy type. But for directors and officers, you need to actually talk to a broker, sit down with them, talk about your needs.
