Even worse, about 21 percent of adults in the U.S. read below a fifth grade level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a teacher myself,\u201d says Zapico, \u201cI really knew the importance of students learning how to read and providing professional development for teachers and school staff members.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After working in the nonprofit sector for years, Zapico is now the executive director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.literacytrust.org\/\">The Literacy Trust.<\/a> This nonprofit works to lower illiteracy rates through its primary program, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.readingrescue.org\/\">Reading Rescue<\/a>. The program\u2019s one-on-one tutoring has been proven to increase literacy through its daily 30-minute sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"557\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/08\/Tiffany-Zapico.jpg\" alt=\"Tiffany Zapico\" class=\"wp-image-22874\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Founders:&nbsp;<\/strong>Nora Hoover<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Year founded:<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>1993<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Employees:&nbsp;<\/strong>8 people<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where we\u2019re based: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/new-york-city\/penn-station\">WeWork Penn Station<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Moment of inspiration: \u201c<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">When I was a teacher, I saw what little resourses teachers and staff members had and how that impacted the students,\u201d says Zapico.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Biggest hurdle: \u201c<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Navigating the challenges each community faces has been difficult,\u201d says Zapico. \u201cWe\u2019re primarily in disadvantaged communities, and there\u2019s a lot of outside factors our students and staff members face. So you have to be sensitive to that. We don\u2019t want that to hold us back from students\u2019 success.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">How we want to change the world:<\/strong><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">&nbsp;<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u201cOur vision is that we change the world by empowering students to be able to read and become literate,\u201d says Zapico. \u201cThe ability to read should be a basic human right.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tiffany Zapico is troubled by the fact that 20 percent of high school graduates cannot read their own diplomas.
