Carissa Johnson found her calling early. She knew that she wanted to help people, and that the most challenging place was in nonprofit organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love the nonprofit world,\u201d says Carissa Johnson, \u201cwhether it\u2019s going for a goal and raising money or just raising awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson, who has a bachelor\u2019s degree in psychology and a master\u2019s in nonprofit management, now serves as the director of operations at Project 375<\/a>, a nonprofit passionately dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded by Brandon Marshall, one of the best wide receivers in football history, the organization\u2019s mission is to provide behavioral and mental health care when and where it is needed most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moment of inspiration:\u00a0\u201c<\/strong>Just having a background in psychology, I\u2019ve always been interested in the mind and hearing people talk about what\u2019s going on up there,\u201d says Johnson. \u201cAfter talking to my friends and the founders of Project 375, it just clicked, and I knew it was perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biggest hurdle: <\/strong>\u201cThe stigma surrounding mental health has been the biggest hurdle for us,\u201d says Johnson. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to get it across to people that it’s okay to live with depression, and that you\u2019re still normal. It\u2019s a disease just like cancer, and getting people and the community to understand that is difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How we want to change the world:<\/strong> Johnson says she wants to \u201cpaint the world lime green,\u201d a color that has come to symbolize issues around mental illness. \u201cWe want people to know about and understand what it means to have a mental disorder,\u201d says Johnson. \u201cWe want it to be a worldwide, simple conversation without the stigma attached to it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
