{"id":22533,"date":"2016-08-02T17:57:51","date_gmt":"2016-08-02T21:57:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/?p=22533"},"modified":"2020-04-03T15:52:27","modified_gmt":"2020-04-03T19:52:27","slug":"good-steve-messeh-hope-association","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/member-spotlight\/good-steve-messeh-hope-association","title":{"rendered":"Doing Good: Steve Messeh of the HOPE Association"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After attending church one afternoon, a group of friends in the nation\u2019s capital asked themselves this question: How could they start an organization to meet the needs of children without asking for anything in return?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been doing community service for years,\u201d says Steve Messeh, \u201cand it bothered me that a lot of the time when people are doing good, there are strings attached.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Messeh is a co-founder of the Washington, D.C.-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehopeassociation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HOPE Association<\/a>, a faith-based nonprofit with the mission of transforming the lives of children in need. It\u2019s a religious organization, but it also tries to meet the \u201cphysical, emotional, and social needs\u201d of these children.<\/p>\n<p>They raise money in some very innovative ways. One volunteer who is an avid long-distance runner ran 3,000 miles to raise cash for a new pediatric mobile health clinic that will serve some of the poorest neighborhoods in the D.C. and L.A. areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22535 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/Steve-Messeh.jpg?resize=400%2C250\" alt=\"Steve Messeh\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\" \/>Founders:\u00a0<\/strong>Steve Messeh, Anthony Girges, Paul Hakim, Maged Sharabi, and Nadeen Weybrecht<\/p>\n<p><strong>Year founded:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>2012<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Employees:\u00a0<\/strong>5\u00a0directors, 1\u00a0full-time staff member, and 4\u00a0part-time staff members<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where we\u2019re based: <\/strong>WeWork Member in Washington D.C. <strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Moment of inspiration:\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cI remember sitting in a board meeting and giving this vision of the organization,\u201d says Messeh. \u201cThe board members laughed, saying I was talking about an organization that\u2019s huge and global with an investment that doesn\u2019t match. Either we need to increase investment or lower expectations and visions\u2014which was true. I needed to invest my whole life. That was when the burden was laid on me to leave my job as a financial analyst.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biggest hurdle: <\/strong>&#8220;The biggest hurdle in a nonprofit is volunteer management,\u201d says Messeh. \u201cYou have full-time and part-time staff trying to manage volunteers who don\u2019t have that same level of engagement and commitment. You have limited time with volunteers, so you have to maximize it and appreciate them at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>How we want to change the world:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cWe want to change the world one person at a time,\u201d says Messeh. \u201cWhat hinders most people from serving one person is the idea that they can\u2019t serve a million. There\u2019s a famous quote that says \u2018Do what you wish to do for a million people\u2014for one person.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After attending church one
