It was during this season that her mother and father\u2014an elementary school teacher and contractor, respectively\u2014would go hunting, so off to grandmother\u2019s house and <em>The Nutcracker<\/em> rehearsals the young ballet dancer would go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brandenburg\u2019s \u201cvery conservative\u201d and \u201cvery English\u201d grandmother \u201cwas uptight about everything but the movies,\u201d she says. When they weren\u2019t at the theater, they would stay in and watch classics like <em>Gone with the Wind. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy first love of movies came from that,\u201d says Brandenburg, now 37. \u201cI always loved musicals, but I couldn\u2019t sing. So I didn\u2019t think it was an option for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/Colette-Brandenburg\u2019s-Love-of-Old-Musicals-Shines-Through-in-LA-Follies2-400x571.jpg\" alt=\"Colette Brandenburg\u2019s Love of Old Musicals Shines Through in LA Follies2\" class=\"wp-image-22441\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Little did she know back then, watching movie musicals with her grandmother, that she\u2019d eventually start a dance troupe of her own called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lafollies.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LA Follies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A dancer her whole life, Brandenburg moved to New York after college. She was disappointed by&nbsp;how little money she and other dancers were making for months of hard work in off-Broadway shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNew York\u2019s market is really saturated for dancers,\u201d she says. On the other hand, \u201cI\u2019ve always been more interested in composition and creation than being in other people\u2019s work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A choreography job landed her in Los Angeles, where she got an artist residency at a city college. While working a shift at the Otheroom bar in Venice, she met a member of the National Theatre of Scotland who was performing in <em>Black Watch.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was moving, provocative, frightening,\u201d Brandenburg says of the performance. &#8220;And it was the first time that I had seen dance used in a theater setting, where it actually moved the story forward and wasn&#8217;t ornamental.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To fully immerse herself in physical theater, the choreographer recommended Brandenburg go to London. There, she got an MFA in choreography and started her own company called <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederation.virb.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Federation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/Colette-Brandenburg\u2019s-Love-of-Old-Musicals-Shines-Through-in-LA-Follies3-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Colette Brandenburg\u2019s Love of Old Musicals Shines Through in LA Follies3\" class=\"wp-image-22443\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a loose company,\u201d she says, \u201cbut it gave me a taste of what it was like to run a company.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduation, Brandenburg returned to Los Angeles. Unable to find a thriving theater scene parallel to what she had encountered across the pond, she became a lecturer at Cal State University, Los Angeles and was part of the WaterWorld crew at Universal Studios doing pyrotechnics and working on roughly 30 <em>Terminator<\/em> shows a day. Even then, she was taking mental notes for a great, looming project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne thing that is interesting is that they train for mistakes,\u201d says Brandenburg. \u201cThere are, I think, something like 17 variations of the show. Often, something is wrong\u2014maybe a performer missed one trick, or something didn&#8217;t fire right, or there&#8217;s some sort of mechanical issue\u2014so the performers know all these different variations of the show and have to implement them when things don&#8217;t work. It&#8217;s like failure is built into the show.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/Colette-Brandenburg\u2019s-Love-of-Old-Musicals-Shines-Through-in-LA-Follies4-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Colette Brandenburg\u2019s Love of Old Musicals Shines Through in LA Follies4\" class=\"wp-image-22445\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But dance was her first love, and it frustrated her to see so many good dancers unable to find well-paid jobs&nbsp;in L.A. So in 2012, Brandenburg co-founded a dance company called LA Follies with producer Bonnie McMahan, who she met while working on <em>Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t really think I was going to start a business,\u201d says Brandenburg. \u201cI thought I was just going to create something to support my choreography.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after the company was founded, Shannon Zimmerman stepped in as co-founder. While Brandenburg takes control of ballet choreography, Zimmer leads all the tap dancing. For hip hop, contemporary jazz, fire, and synchronized swimming, they bring on additional experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/Colette-Brandenburg\u2019s-Love-of-Old-Musicals-Shines-Through-in-LA-Follies5-400x571.jpg\" alt=\"Colette Brandenburg\u2019s Love of Old Musicals Shines Through in LA Follies5\" class=\"wp-image-22447\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A cymbal player in her high school marching band, it\u2019s no surprise that Brandenburg loves seeing large groups of people move in formation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel like now musicals are focused on vocals, but the old ones, the dancers were just\u2014it was crazy what they would do,\u201d says the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/los-angeles\/santa-monica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Santa Monica<\/a> member. \u201cMGM and these big, huge film companies had an in-house dance company.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspired by everything from <em>Annie<\/em> to <em>Funny Girl<\/em> to Busby Berkeley\u2019s hypnotizing choreography on the silver screen, LA Follies will make any event pop by reintroducing and reinventing an old Hollywood charm and wonder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Follies perform at holiday and birthday parties alike, their past clients including Yahoo, Google, LinkedIn, and Kris Jenner, to name a few.
