She was 26 at the time, living in New York City, working at a French PR company, and about to be promoted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was also falling in love. Nate, whom she describes as \u201cthe creative guy on the 11th floor with the long hair,\u201d had asked her out on multiple occasions. But each time she said yes, she received disappointing test results from her doctor. She wasn\u2019t ready to face Nate, let alone the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI called Nate, and I was like, \u2018I\u2019m so sorry to do this, but I have to break our date yet again,\u2019\u201d Dolce recalls. \u201cAnd he was like, \u2018If you don\u2019t like me, then tell me.\u2019 So I finally told him to come over that weekend, and I told him I was diagnosed with breast cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/Kara-Dolce-on-Feeling-Beautiful-During-the-Fight-Against-Cancer2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Kara Dolce on Feeling Beautiful During the Fight Against Cancer2\" class=\"wp-image-22349\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>His response was an affirming reminder that he wasn\u2019t going anywhere anytime soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe puts his hand on top of my hand, and he\u2019s like, \u2018Well, what do we do next?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two spent five years enduring radiation, chemotherapy, and procedures including a double mastectomy. When the doctors saw no sign of any existing cancer cells after that, Dolce received the go ahead signal to stop treatment. She felt relieved, afraid, and strong\u2014all at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/Kara-Dolce-on-Feeling-Beautiful-During-the-Fight-Against-Cancer3-571x800.jpg\" alt=\"Kara Dolce on Feeling Beautiful During the Fight Against Cancer3\" class=\"wp-image-22350\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know a thousand percent that I don\u2019t have one little cancer cell left in my body, but I feel empowered, and confident, and amazing,\u201d Dolce says. \u201cThe thing that always stuck in my head despite this is: never give up. Don\u2019t give up on your happiness, fighting this fight, and trying to make yourself feel beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s the message she wants to send, literally, through her nonprofit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightingpretty.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fighting Pretty<\/a>. Through delivering care packages, Dolce hopes to send cancer-fighting women beauty products, including makeup and accessories, that empower them to fight and not give up. Dolce recalls how important it was to feel beautiful and boost her confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would always get dressed up for chemotherapy and wear bright pink lipstick, and big earrings, and colorful scarves,\u201d Dolce recalls. \u201cPeople would ask, \u2018How do you look so good?\u2019 It\u2019s called makeup. I have no boobs, no hair, no eyelashes, and my skin is gray. I look like a sick person. But I\u2019m faking it at the hospital because it makes me feel better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/Kara-Dolce-on-Feeling-Beautiful-During-the-Fight-Against-Cancer4-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Kara Dolce on Feeling Beautiful During the Fight Against Cancer4\" class=\"wp-image-22351\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2013, the couple moved out to Portland where Dolce is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/portland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Custom House<\/a> member. These past few months, she\u2019s been ramping up support for her nonprofit by partnering with industry giants in campaigns to give women a confidence booster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are partnering with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.glossybox.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glossybox<\/a>, a competitor of Birchbox, and they\u2019re doing limited edition Fighting Pretty boxes anyone can buy. The proceeds go to us. I had a call with Maybelline. I\u2019m asking for different sponsorship levels. So we\u2019ll see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each care package includes Fighting Pretty\u2019s iconic product: mini pink boxing gloves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had these pair of mini pink boxing gloves that I used through my whole treatment,\u201d Dolce says. \u201cI would look at myself in the mirror every day and say, \u2018You can do this.
