They even went out together to buy binders to organize all their classwork, an experience that taught them something important about each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe quickly found out that we were the only two people in the whole school who actually bought binders,\u201d McPhee says with a chuckle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And although both of them were already working on separate startup ideas, from that first day they knew they wanted to collaborate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/At-Bizzy-Jennifer-Kessler-and-Chiara-McPhee-Take-the-Pain-Out-of-Marketing2-400x571.jpg\" alt=\"View More: http:\/\/twentytwentystudios.pass.us\/creator-mag-shoots\" class=\"wp-image-22320\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe got lucky when we met each other in business school,\u201d says McPhee. \u201cIt was one of the best things we got out of the experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They ended up letting their other projects fall by the wayside so they could focus their attention on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizzy.io\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bizzy<\/a>, a mobile marketing tool designed with small businesses in mind. The software they designed scans a company\u2019s emails for customers who are most likely to make a purchase and then creates marketing plans tailored to those people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe made it our priority to take the busy work out of marketing,\u201d says McPhee, speaking from her office in San Francisco\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/san-francisco\/soma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork SOMA<\/a>. \u201cThat way, businesses can focus on what\u2019s most important, like launching their brand and focusing on their product.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the best part for many young companies? It doesn\u2019t require a huge marketing budget to start out with Bizzy because they don\u2019t pay until they start seeing results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea was ingenious enough that it caught the eye of the Y Combinator, a highly competitive incubator program that accepts less than two percent of the entrepreneurs that apply. They say they were motivated by all the great feedback about their platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/At-Bizzy-Jennifer-Kessler-and-Chiara-McPhee-Take-the-Pain-Out-of-Marketing3-400x571.jpg\" alt=\"View More: http:\/\/twentytwentystudios.pass.us\/creator-mag-shoots\" class=\"wp-image-22321\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And, of course, they were both already very familiar with the startup world. Kessler had earned a degree in mathematics and cognitive neuroscience from the University of Pennsylvania and had founded a company that focused on math and science toys for young girls. McPhee studied public policy at Duke and had been president of a company that used tech solutions to increase children\u2019s literacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their experience in the startup world taught them a lot about what small businesses needed to succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to build a marketing platform that was powerful and very easy to use,\u201d says Kessler. \u201cBasically, we were building the tool that we wished we had in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bizzy evolved as they went along. Originally it was intended for brick-and-mortar businesses, but then they noticed the explosion of ecommerce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The platform has been live for about a year, and Kessler and McPhee have been adding features as they go along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/At-Bizzy-Jennifer-Kessler-and-Chiara-McPhee-Take-the-Pain-Out-of-Marketing4-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"View More: http:\/\/twentytwentystudios.pass.us\/creator-mag-shoots\" class=\"wp-image-22322\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRight now, we\u2019re focused on email, but we want to run all your marketing for all your channels,\u201d says Kessler. \u201cThat\u2019s something we\u2019ve had in mind since the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019ve also been adding staffers. Their staff has grown to five people, including two \u201cincredibly talented\u201d engineers.
