It didn\u2019t end well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter five months, he kicked me out,\u201d says the Montreal resident. \u201cThe whole cohabitation thing wasn\u2019t working out at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this got her thinking: What if people in the food business\u2014caterers, cooks, or restaurateurs, for example\u2014had a commercial kitchen they could use whenever they needed one? It would include separate office space, comfortable common areas, and even conference rooms for when they needed to bring together their teams or meet with prospective clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was the thinking behind the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefoodroom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Food Room<\/a>, which Morency describes as the \u201cfirst culinary coworking space of its kind in North America.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/Something\u2019s-Cooking-with-Ame\u0301lie-Morency-Creator-of-the-Food-Room2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Something\u2019s Cooking with Ame\u0301lie Morency, Creator of the Food Room2\" class=\"wp-image-22280\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re in the food business, you need kitchen space you can rely on,\u201d says Morency, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/montreal\/place-ville-marie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Place Ville Marie<\/a> member. \u201cYou shouldn\u2019t have to wait to see if you can arrange for space somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morency will soon be cutting the ribbon on the first Food Room location, located at 465 Rue de Port Royal Ouest, in Montreal\u2019s Ahuntsic-Cartierville neighborhood. The kitchen is spacious, able to accommodate everyone from a chef trying out a new recipe to a catering company arranging a lavish affair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colleagues in the food business have been enthusiastic about Morency\u2019s idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have the capacity for about 100 businesses to share the space,\u201d says Morency. \u201cAnd 25 have signed up already.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/Something\u2019s-Cooking-with-Ame\u0301lie-Morency-Creator-of-the-Food-Room3-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Something\u2019s Cooking with Ame\u0301lie Morency, Creator of the Food Room3\" class=\"wp-image-22281\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Integral to Morency\u2019s idea is the abundant space outside the kitchen. Instead of private offices, there are clusters of desks where anyone can set up a temporary office. And the common areas are meant to encourage collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morency knows all about encouraging new businesses to grow. She\u2019s a 2015 graduate of the competitive Founder Institute, the world&#8217;s largest entrepreneur training and startup launch program. She wants to pass along that knowledge to the business founders who join the Food Room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe can hook them up with whatever resources they need,\u201d says Morency. \u201cWe can help them operate their business more smoothly.
