\u201cWhat are you gonna do after college?\u201d asked the executive director of the nonprofit where Kaneisha Grayson was volunteering the summer before her senior year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The black studies major mentioned her one-year scholarship in Africa, but after that? Her future was wide open. That\u2019s when Grayson was told she had a \u201ckeen business sense\u201d and should consider going to school for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI literally Googled \u2018What is business school?\u2019\u201d recalls Grayson, now 32 years old, from her workspace in Austin\u2019s WeWork University Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harvard Business School\u2019s website instantly popped up, asking all of the right questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you want a transformative experience?<\/em> \u201cYes!\u201d thought Grayson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you want to be in class with the world\u2019s leaders? <\/em>\u201cYes, I do<\/em>!\u201d she agreed again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grayson was ready for the new challenge, despite lacking considerable experience in the business world. The \u201cclosest thing\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was a scanning person at the grocery store, and I was the popcorn person at the movies,\u201d says Grayson. \u201cAnd I worked at Sylvan Learning center filing papers in high school. But I just had that entrepreneurial drive. I was like, \u2018If I\u2019m gonna go to business school, I want to go to the best<\/em> business school.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which she did. And after helping many prospective students for free\u2014answering questions about applying to Harvard\u2014a friend commented, \u201cThat is a business. You need to do it as a business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the last few weeks of graduate school, in 2010, Grayson submitted a business plan to Harvard\u2019s entrepreneurship center. She was given the green light and awarded $10,000 to start The Art of Applying<\/a>, as well as a Kickstarter for her self-help books<\/a>. \u201cI am a writer who\u2019s not currently writing, but it\u2019s not abandoned,\u201d she stresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At The Art of Applying, Grayson and her team of consultants<\/a> help people from all over the world apply to Ivy League policy schools, business schools, and law schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur biggest win in hiring was getting Judy Kugel,\u201d Grayson says. \u201cShe worked at Harvard for 33 years, and she was on the admissions committee at Harvard for 25 years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, they\u2019ve extended their counsel to include helping high school students apply to college, as well as career coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does The Art of Applying \u201chelp prepare the next generation of the world\u2019s leaders\u201d exactly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the ways is just helping them feel like this is something that they can do,\u201d Grayson says. \u201cLike, look at me. I don\u2019t look like the people you see on Wolf of Wall Street<\/em> or whatever. So you can do it, too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another crucial part of Grayson\u2019s job is encouraging people, especially women, to aim for the stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA big part of my job is helping people admit that they want to be rich and\/or powerful,\u201d Grayson says. \u201cI feel like a huge part of my job is to get people to admit what they really want to do, but A) not being judgmental, but also just letting them know: you are applying to Harvard. These are the most ambitious, driven people. So this is not the time to be shy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grayson is proud of pushing herself to receive both a business degree from HBS and a public administration degree from the Harvard Kennedy School. But what she regrets is the \u201chuge burden\u201d she accumulated in student loans\u2014\u201cDebt is detrimental to artists,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since its inception, The Art of Applying has advised hundreds of students\u2014that means a combined millions of dollars awarded in fellowships. Sure, sometimes clients aren\u2019t awarded any money. But sometimes, they get $10,000 or $20,000. And often, clients will announce they got \u201cthree full rides\u201d: Harvard, Stanford, and Princeton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is like my redemption,\u201d Grayson says, \u201cor my amends to myself\u2014to help people understand the gravity and the seriousness of student loans and take on as little as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
