Finding creative ways to get kids to enjoy eating vegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo many kids hate vegetables,\u201d says Thaler, founder of the Brooklyn Heights-based company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodartforkids.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Food Art for Kids<\/a>. \u201cI really try to figure out what is it that\u2019s not appealing to them. Some kids say it\u2019s the texture. Or they feel like it\u2019s too gaudy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Thaler\u2019s daughter was five, she took her to a cooking class in Brooklyn, where she met a woman who taught kids how to create their own meals. Thaler loved the idea of getting kids to appreciate nutritious food so much that she started her own children&#8217;s cooking camp six summers ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/At-Food-Art-for-Kids-Michelle-Thaler-Teaches-Kids-to-Love-Their-Vegetables2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"At Food Art for Kids, Michelle Thaler Teaches Kids to Love Their Vegetables2\" class=\"wp-image-22205\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKids come in and say, \u2018I hate vegetables\u2019 and \u2018I would never eat a tomato,\u2019\u201d says Thaler, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/membership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork<\/a> member. \u201cAnd we go to the farmers\u2019 market, and I show them the process of how food gets from market to plate.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then she teaches them to wash, prep, and cook what they bought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When they taste it, and they say \u2018yum,\u2019 just to see their face is so rewarding,&#8221; she says. &#8220;My contribution to society is for kids to be eating more vegetables.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2011, Thaler has been running the cooking camp for nine weeks from July to September. She not only launched her own website, she also wrote the camp\u2019s educational curriculum and serves as a counselor. She\u2019s also enlisted the help of a handful of college students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/At-Food-Art-for-Kids-Michelle-Thaler-Teaches-Kids-to-Love-Their-Vegetables3-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"At Food Art for Kids, Michelle Thaler Teaches Kids to Love Their Vegetables3\" class=\"wp-image-22206\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLooking back, this was something that was gutsy for me to do,\u201d says Thaler. \u201cI remember the first time I had to learn the WordPress platform to design my website, it took me 200 hours to figure it out. If I had money and can afford to get help, it\u2019d take a shorter time. But it\u2019s good because now I know how to do a lot of things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finding a home for her business was also a challenge for Thaler, who was strapped for cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t take a loan from the bank,\u201d Thaler says. \u201cI was bootstrapping. I didn\u2019t have my own place. I rented space at a church. I just knocked on people\u2019s doors and said, \u2018Please, can you let me use your space for a local business?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This summer, Thaler is looking forward to adding vegan items to the menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/At-Food-Art-for-Kids-Michelle-Thaler-Teaches-Kids-to-Love-Their-Vegetables4-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"At Food Art for Kids, Michelle Thaler Teaches Kids to Love Their Vegetables4\" class=\"wp-image-22209\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLast summer, one girl came, and she was born a vegan, so it was a challenge for me to try to figure out what we can make,\u201d Thaler says. \u201cI realize there are so many kids with allergies nowadays. So that got me to try a week where I will have a vegan option.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A day at Food Art for Kids entails trips to the local farmers\u2019 market and Fairway Market to pick out ingredients for the daily menu. Sometimes they\u2019ll go on culinary adventures, such as learning how to make bread from a professional baker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s also a weekly field trip that gives kids a chance to visit places like Steve\u2019s Authentic Key Lime Pies, the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory, and the rooftop farm in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another specialty item on the menu this summer?
