Skedaddle wants to take you there"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It\u2019s not overstating things to say that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letskedaddle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Skedaddle<\/a> is the company that ride-sharing services&nbsp;use to get around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJust a couple of weeks ago, we arranged for three buses for one company&nbsp;to take employees to a company retreat on the Jersey Shore,\u201d says Brad Werntz, Skedaddle\u2019s president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skedaddle is an&nbsp;app for people itching to get out of the city. Say you and some friends want to travel from New York City to Catskills State Park for a day of hiking the trails. Book through the company\u2019s app\u2014available at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/skedaddle-go-anywhere.-together.\/id1062027873?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">App Store<\/a>\u2014and you\u2019ll all ride there together on a luxury bus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company\u2019s goal? To make traveling outside an urban area just as easy as booking a car to take you to another neighborhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJust as easily as calling an Uber,\u201d says Werntz, \u201cyou can ride to your favorite place outside of the urban area where you live.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the number of passengers going your way, your ride could be anything from a 15-passenger van to a 55-passenger motor coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/06\/Hitting-the-Road-Skedaddle-Wants-to-Take-You-There2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Hitting the Road? Skedaddle Wants to Take You There2\" class=\"wp-image-21887\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The company, which sold its first tickets last year, originally envisioned their typical passenger to be en route to the beach or the mountains. But to their surprise, many people are in search of an easy way to get to a concert or sports event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSupposed you\u2019re headed to see Bruce Springsteen play at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey,\u201d says Werntz. \u201cTaking Skedaddle from New York City is a whole lot easier than taking the PATH train.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or in Boston, Red Sox fans might want to take a Skedaddle to a game at Fenway Park. Werntz says it\u2019s easier than driving through the city, lets you avoid the hassle of parking, and means that nobody has to be the designated driver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Skedaddle hired its first full-time employee. Last month, it was an 11-person operation with offices in Boston\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/v2\/locations\/boston\/south-station\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork South Station<\/a> and New York\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/new-york-city\/chelsea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Chelsea<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the staff has grown to 18. Werntz says that means expanding to more offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/06\/Hitting-the-Road-Skedaddle-Wants-to-Take-You-There3-400x571.jpg\" alt=\"Hitting the Road? Skedaddle Wants to Take You There3\" class=\"wp-image-21888\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re gobbling up space at WeWork,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Werntz, who earned a degree in mechanical engineering and aerospace from Princeton University, says he has always had an entrepreneurial drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to be in a startup before I even knew what a startup was,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right out of college, he got a job with a small startup focusing on sustainable energy for commercial spaces. That\u2019s where he met one of his future co-founders at Skedaddle, Adam Nestler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was working out of the founder\u2019s kitchen,\u201d says Werntz. \u201cAt least I got free breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Werntz and Nestler were still with that startup when it was purchased by a much larger company based in San Francisco. For a while, it was smooth sailing. Then the company tried to grow too big too fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the following year, they completely fumbled a round of funding, and it all fell apart very quickly,\u201d says Werntz. \u201cWe had front-row seats to see everything that you should not do when you\u2019re scaling a software startup.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the company folded, Werntz and Nestler had already been talking about starting their own company. They brought on two other co-founders: Werntz\u2019s friend Lou Harwood and Nestler\u2019s brother Craig Nestler. The company didn\u2019t have a name yet, but that\u2019s when Skedaddle was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/06\/Hitting-the-Road-Skedaddle-Wants-to-Take-You-There4-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Hitting the Road? Skedaddle Wants to Take You There4\" class=\"wp-image-21889\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They were careful not to make the same mistakes as their previous employer. They built the company slowly, making sure investors could see that their business model was viable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were always trying to be a step ahead from where investors expect us to be,\u201d says Werntz. \u201cFor example, we didn\u2019t do an angel round of funding until we had an app and customers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And revenues are continuing to grow. Werntz says the company is currently doing more than $100,000 in business every month.
