{"id":21767,"date":"2016-06-21T15:25:54","date_gmt":"2016-06-21T19:25:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/?p=20784"},"modified":"2020-04-03T17:49:11","modified_gmt":"2020-04-03T21:49:11","slug":"one-montreal-coder-learns-power-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/member-spotlight\/one-montreal-coder-learns-power-community","title":{"rendered":"In Montreal, a coder teaches the power of community"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Days before she was slated to teach 50 students the basics of coding, Roberta Voulon suddenly had no place to hold the workshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Montreal-based co-founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pitonneux.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Les Pitonneux<\/a>, a \u201ccommunity for people learning how to code,\u201d had arranged to use another nonprofit company\u2019s space a couple nights a week. But at the last minute, a dispute with the landlord meant everybody in the building was looking for new office space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Voulon\u2019s friends helped her find a temporary meeting space, but she was still looking for something more permanent. Then she tagged along with colleagues attending an after-work event sponsored by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/montreal\/place-ville-marie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Place Ville Marie<\/a>. Her story impressed the staff so much that they offered her space, free of charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Voulon says she\u2019s thrilled by the warm welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hadn\u2019t even heard of WeWork at that point,\u201d she says. \u201cThey had just opened their first office here in Montreal. But now I feel so much at home, it\u2019s hard to imagine that it hasn\u2019t even been three weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/04\/One-Montreal-Coder-Learns-the-Power-of-Community2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"One Montreal Coder Learns the Power of Community2\" class=\"wp-image-20792\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The connection, Voulon says, is community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCommunity building is such a big part of what WeWork is about,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd that\u2019s also the purpose of Les Pitonneux.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name of her company, Voulon says, is meant to make people who might not be comfortable at a coding class feel at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Piton<\/em> is a word for button, and our name is a slang term that means somebody who is always tapping away on a keyboard,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s meant to show that we don\u2019t take ourselves too seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les Pitonneux has a variety of programs for people who want to hone their coding skills. The people who stop by the free daily get-togethers in the WeWork office run the gamut from students who are still living at home to retirees who want to challenge themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/04\/One-Montreal-Coder-Learns-the-Power-of-Community4-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"One Montreal Coder Learns the Power of Community4\" class=\"wp-image-20796\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd we have plenty of people who are entrepreneurs,\u201d she says. \u201cThey have an idea for an app and want to get enough skills so they can build their own prototype, for example. Or they want to know enough about the tech side so that when they hire someone else, they know what they are talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company also has other programs, including one to help people improve their coding skills enough that they can compete in the workplace. This is the money-making part of the venture. But Voulon emphasizes that the goal is the keep it affordable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A self-professed \u201cgeek,\u201d Voulon also mentors teenage girls as part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technovationchallenge.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Technovation Challenge<\/a>. She says she\u2019s always impressed by the girls she meets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt that age, I don\u2019t remember having such a packed schedule,\u201d she says. \u201cBut they do, and still they find time to learn how to code and create a business plan. And they come out of the program so empowered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/04\/One-Montreal-Coder-Learns-the-Power-of-Community3-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"One Montreal Coder Learns the Power of Community3\" class=\"wp-image-20795\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That doesn\u2019t even count the time she spends with her five-year-old daughter, a budding tech whiz who is about to start a robotics class. Together, they recently participated in a hackathon where they worked on a T-shirt that lit up with a heart-shaped pattern when the wearer gave somebody a hug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for the time being, Voulon is focusing on growing her business and making connections through WeWork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel really proud to be associated with WeWork,\u201d she says. \u201cWorking here is such an awesome opportunity for us.
