There ain\u2019t no mountain high enough\u2014at least not in Seattle. During a recent trip back to his hometown for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nffty.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Film Festival for Talented Youth<\/a>\u2014his eighth year in attendance\u2014Seneker, talking quickly and panting slightly, ascends Mount Si for the first time in a long time, claiming he\u2019s \u201cnot tired or anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While he once took the mesmerizing views for granted\u2014the same views made famous by David Lynch in the TV show <em>Twin Peaks<\/em>\u2014he\u2019s since gained an appreciation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"554\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/05\/On-Top-of-Seattle-Filmmaker-Ethan-Seneker-Reaches-New-Heights2.jpg\" alt=\"On Top of Seattle, Filmmaker Ethan Seneker Reaches New Heights2\" class=\"wp-image-21531\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMoving to L.A. put a lot of things into perspective,\u201d says Seneker, who\u2019s been involved in the film industry ever since he was nine, an actor turned writer and producer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bypassing the traditional film school route\u2014\u201cPointless,\u201d he says, due to the debt he\u2019d have to spend years paying off\u2014Seneker moved to California for what he describes as a school-meets-fellowship experience created by film studio Relativity Media. Around six months in, Seneker dropped out of that program and became a consultant for the studio\u2019s digital department. A few months later, the studio went bankrupt and he got laid off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for Seneker, it\u2019s all silver linings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being \u201con the inside of a company crumbling like that,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/pricing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork member<\/a> witnessed how spreading your business too thin can detract from what you originally sought out to accomplish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what next?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/05\/On-Top-of-Seattle-Filmmaker-Ethan-Seneker-Reaches-New-Heights3.jpg\" alt=\"On Top of Seattle, Filmmaker Ethan Seneker Reaches New Heights3\" class=\"wp-image-21537\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Seneker focused his attention on his own short film about self-awareness, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9y-xszK0sLI&amp;app=desktop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Color of My Shadow<\/em><\/a>. In need of funding, Seneker paired up with an agency called <a href=\"http:\/\/saddleroad.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Saddle Road<\/a>, billed as a place where \u201cyour art and creativity flourish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seneker soon became the head of production for the company\u2019s digital team. He drafted a proposal for how he wanted to transform the department, which he says was on the traditional side, sticking to feature films, commercials, and corporate work. Saddle Road even got a space at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/los-angeles\/gas-tower\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Gas Tower<\/a> specifically for the digital team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey didn\u2019t really have much of a digital presence, which nowadays is absolutely essential,\u201d says Seneker. To change that, he secured partnership deals: one with an ad agency that makes series for brands, and the other with a company that\u2019s developing projects in virtual reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/05\/On-Top-of-Seattle-Filmmaker-Ethan-Seneker-Reaches-New-Heights4.jpg\" alt=\"On Top of Seattle, Filmmaker Ethan Seneker Reaches New Heights4\" class=\"wp-image-21539\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Working at Saddle Road has given Seneker a chance to think about what he\u2019d like to accomplish in the next few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s something that I started resonating with recently,\u201d Seneker admits. \u201cI\u2019ve gone through the phase of <em>how<\/em> to do something, and now I\u2019m beginning the phase on <em>why<\/em> I do it. So just really focusing on learning more about who I am, under the skin, and figuring out: What do I like? What moves me? What do I find wonder in?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, Seneker started his own company called Spark Medium. Seneker says that it\u2019s going to produce \u201ca series of raw, really micro-short real glimpses into people\u2019s lives around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always been asked the question of \u2018What kind of movies do you make?\u2019\u201d says Seneker, a huge fan of directors Steven Soderbergh and Nicolas Winding Refn. \u201cI want to make intimate movies, where when you\u2019re watching it, sometimes the rest of the world sorta goes black. You\u2019re <em>in<\/em> it.
