He saw how waste collectors lived, scraping by on meager wages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey got 15 cents for collecting 120 plastic bottles,\u201d says the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/amsterdam\/metropool\">WeWork Metropool<\/a> member.<\/p>\n<p>As he thought about what he could do to help waste collectors, an idea came to mind.\u00a0Why not use technology to convert this plastic into something productive? He envisioned a way to transform it into a filament for 3D printers that would be in demand for global markets, increasing the pay for waste collectors and bringing money back into local economies. That\u2019s how <a href=\"http:\/\/reflowfilament.com\/\">Reflow<\/a> was born.<\/p>\n<p>Middendorp\u2019s vision is to set up production centers in developing countries, giving jobs to workers and bolstering the economy. Reflow has already opened\u00a0a small-scale manufacturing facility in Dar es Salaam, a city in Tanzania. It currently has the support of the World Bank and <a href=\"http:\/\/sticlab.blogspot.com\/\">STICLab<\/a>, a Tanzania-based technology center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c3D printing has big potential in countries like Tanzania,\u201d says Middendorp. \u201cThe country doesn\u2019t have the capital to set up local printing productions and connect their products to nearby consumer markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reflow has also launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/reflow\/reflow-recycled-pet-filament-made-in-developing-re\">Kickstarter campaign<\/a> to help it move past the initial pilot program.
