{"id":21145,"date":"2016-05-04T17:57:20","date_gmt":"2016-05-04T21:57:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/?p=21145"},"modified":"2020-03-30T19:26:31","modified_gmt":"2020-03-30T23:26:31","slug":"stealth-socks-kick-off-a-high-tech-clothing-empire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/member-spotlight\/stealth-socks-kick-off-a-high-tech-clothing-empire","title":{"rendered":"Stealth Socks kick off a high-tech clothing empire"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A lot of clothing companies talk about being stylish and having the best fit. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.impeccable.maison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maison Impeccable<\/a>, a high-tech apparel startup, wants you to have both of those things, along with futuristic fabrics that make your clothes supremely comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur company is all about creating clothes with powerful technology behind it,\u201d says 24-year-old Gabriela de Araujo, one of the company\u2019s three co-founders. \u201cWe want to create an entire wardrobe of high-tech clothes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take the company\u2019s first offering, called Stealth Socks. It combines the technology of bacteriostatic silver and activated carbon-infused fibers to maximize flexibility and eliminate foot odor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a game changer, says 24-year-old co-founder Ben Yelian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/05\/Stealth-Socks-Kick-Off-a-High-Tech-Clothing-Empire2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Stealth Socks Kick Off a High-Tech Clothing Empire2\" class=\"wp-image-21153\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re the first in the U.S. to combine both silver and carbon and operate that synergistically,\u201d says Yelian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s an idea that has clearly caught on with consumers. A recently completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/708442929\/stealth-socks-covertly-fresh-impeccably-styled\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kickstarter campaign<\/a> raised more than $150,000\u2014more than 15 times the company\u2019s original goal. Now they&#8217;ve launched an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiegogo.com\/projects\/stealth-socks-covertly-fresh-impeccably-styled#\/\">Indiegogo campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea for the product originated with Yelian, a former management consultant based in Chicago. Traveling from city to city, he spent the majority of his time living out of a suitcase and camping out at airports. He\u2019d then come home from his work trips, take off his shoes, and get a whiff of a hard day\u2019s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a consultant, you wear leather dress shoes and are on your feet a lot,\u201d Yelian says. \u201cThat\u2019s not a good situation for preventing things like foot odor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/05\/Stealth-Socks-Kick-Off-a-High-Tech-Clothing-Empire3-400x571.jpg\" alt=\"Stealth Socks Kick Off a High-Tech Clothing Empire3\" class=\"wp-image-21154\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After doing some research, Yelian discovered that socks would be a great item to start with when designing a cutting-edge clothing line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom the development perspective, it\u2019s faster to go to market with socks than doing multiple product samples with jackets and suits, which is expensive,\u201d Yelian says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Armed with a degree in business administration, he got to work. But he knew he couldn\u2019t do it alone. He enlisted the help of de Araujo and another high school friend, 25-year-old Kevin Shih.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKevin\u2019s background was in medicine,\u201d Yelian says. \u201cHe did research on new technology. During clinics and classes, he came to the realization that both of us were interested in using smart technology to improve the style and fashion of street wear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De Araujo, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/new-york-city\/soho-west\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Soho West<\/a> member, brought with her a background as a consultant and an assistant buyer in retail. Her role is in public relations and marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI never knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur, but once I became one, I never wanted to go back,\u201d de Araujo says. \u201cIt\u2019s so empowering to create something on your own. It\u2019s so gratifying. It\u2019s worth more than any paycheck you will ever receive. And as a woman, it\u2019s great to encourage other females to follow their dreams and build their own company.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/05\/Stealth-Socks-Kick-Off-a-High-Tech-Clothing-Empire4-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Stealth Socks Kick Off a High-Tech Clothing Empire4\" class=\"wp-image-21155\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The trio\u2019s next idea is dress pants that are comfortable, stylish, and a perfect fit.
