From his spot in the crowd, he spotted an inexpensive electric vehicle&nbsp;that had been constructed from a kit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs soon as I saw this thing, that was the light bulb moment,\u201d says the member of Portland\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/portland\/custom-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Custom House<\/a>. \u201cThe light bulb illuminated a giant gap between the motorcycle and the car.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frohnmayer did some research into the market and realized that nobody else had found a way to produce smartly designed, reasonably priced electric vehicles. So he founded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcimoto.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arcimoto<\/a> in 2007, spending more than eight years working on prototypes of his groundbreaking three-wheeled electric motorcycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the first of its kind in the world,\u201d says Frohnmayer. \u201cRight now on the market there isn&#8217;t another vehicle that both provides daily urban utility, is all electric, and is affordable. We expect competition to emerge, but right now it\u2019s in a class of its own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reviewers who took a test drive earlier this year gave it raves, calling it \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2016\/01\/the-arcimoto-srk-electric-vehicle-is-the-most-fun-thing-we-did-at-ces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the most fun thing<\/a>,\u201d adding that they were \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2016\/01\/06\/arcimoto-srk-review\/#WpGd0UiXs8q8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">amazed by its quickness<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/04\/Arcimoto\u2019s-Zippy-Electric-Car-is-Cheap-Smart-and-a-Blast-to-Drive2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Arcimoto\u2019s Zippy Electric Car is Cheap, Smart, and a Blast to Drive2\" class=\"wp-image-21046\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Frohnmayer\u2019s team of 17 is made up of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, industrial designers, and fabricators who are all working together to create one cohesive design. They\u2019ve been designing and building out prototypes in the company\u2019s studio space in Eugene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The design is extremely simple, stripped down to the essentials. On the basic model, there aren\u2019t even doors. Frohnmayer says his goal was to provide plenty of room for two passengers with the minimum number of bells and whistles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s really what the simplicity aspect of the design process is,\u201d Frohnmayer says. \u201cWe\u2019ve built this generation from the inside out, making sure a wide range of drivers are comfortable in the vehicles. Then you\u2019re left with, \u2018Now that all the foundational function is there, what\u2019s the minimum structure and shaping we can use to enclose that?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YbTApx7ItBQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fifth generation<\/a> of the vehicle, called the SRK, is even more technologically advanced. Frohnmayer says it combines an efficient electric vehicle platform with mobile app technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The target customers for the SRK are motorcycle&nbsp;buyers who want an affordable, smart, and efficient alternative to gas-powered cars. Arcimoto is accepting preorders for its first fleet of 50 vehicles, which is slated to come off the assembly line next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/04\/Arcimoto\u2019s-Zippy-Electric-Car-is-Cheap-Smart-and-a-Blast-to-Drive3-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Arcimoto\u2019s Zippy Electric Car is Cheap, Smart, and a Blast to Drive3\" class=\"wp-image-21047\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The price for the stripped down model is $11,900, while those equipped for all-weather driving or fashioned into delivery vehicles top out just over $20,000. In comparison, Mitsubishi\u2019s i-MiEV has a base price of $22,995. Tesla\u2019s cheapest battery-powered electric car, the Model 3, will set customers back about $35,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone who wants to be among the first to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcimoto.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">test drive<\/a> an SRK will soon get their chance. Frohnmayer says prototypes will be touring the West Coast in May and the East Coast in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frohnmayer says his longtime connection with WeWork has provided vital support for Arcimoto. He remembers playing basketball with WeWork co-founder Miguel McKelvey when the two were in middle school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The connection continued after that. Back in the late \u201990s, McKelvey, Frohnmayer, and a group of daring young entrepreneurs founded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/personal-profiles\/parking-lot-conversation-propels-careers-7-entrepreneurs\/?utm_source=wework&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=creator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Starve Ups<\/a>, a nonprofit accelerator program based in Oregon. It\u2019s now based in WeWork Custom House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/04\/Arcimoto\u2019s-Zippy-Electric-Car-is-Cheap-Smart-and-a-Blast-to-Drive4-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Arcimoto\u2019s Zippy Electric Car is Cheap, Smart, and a Blast to Drive4\" class=\"wp-image-21048\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStarve Ups has been an amazing resource at multiple key points in the company&#8217;s development,\u201d Frohnmayer says. \u201cWhen we&#8217;ve been on the ropes, I&#8217;ve had a group of peer CEOs always on hand for advice and assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that he was introduced to Arcimoto&#8217;s primary funder at a Starve Ups event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frohnmayer\u2019s immediate goal is to get his product on the road on the West Coast, then partner with other companies to bring it to more markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And he\u2019s dreaming even bigger. He sees Arcimoto\u2019s vehicles as part of a \u201csustainable transportation system\u201d across the country.
