The video for the Pharrell Williams song \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/fantasistautamaro.com\/PHARRELL-WILLIAMS\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">It Girl<\/a>,\u201d inspired by the graphics of &#8217;80s video games, was created by the Tokyo-based design company. And some handbags that will be swinging from the arms of models when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rebeccaminkoff.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rebecca Minkoff<\/a> announces her new line this fall? Also Kotobukisun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in between, the cutting-edge team of artists and designers creates everything from candy-colored anime music videos to super-saturated textiles to neon-tinted interiors for trendy clubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"566\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/04\/Drawing-on-Anime-Arts-Collective-Blends-Tokyo\u2019s-Chaos-and-Brooklyn\u2019s-Cool5.jpg\" alt=\"SSC_mech_B3\" class=\"wp-image-20634\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to explain to people what Kotobukisun is,\u201d says Steven Williams, president of the company\u2019s new branch in the U.S. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot of different things, not just an animation company or a music company or a video company.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re expecting Kotobukisun\u2019s first office outside of Tokyo to be in New York City, you\u2019re only partly right. The powers that be bypassed Manhattan in favor of Brooklyn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBrooklyn is the epicenter of art these days,\u201d says Williams. \u201cNot just music, but video, fashion, and design. It\u2019s becoming one of the big cultural centers of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fantasista Utamaro, the founder of Kotobukisun, says that the location is not accidental. Tokyo residents have a fascination with Brooklyn, going so far as to wearing the borough\u2019s latest fashions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey idolize Brooklyn in Tokyo,\u201d says Utamaro, who spends quite a bit of time in the borough. \u201cIn Japan, people like new experience and new things. And the culture from Brooklyn, with its creativity and its craftsmanship, appeals to Japanese people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/04\/Drawing-on-Anime-Arts-Collective-Blends-Tokyo\u2019s-Chaos-and-Brooklyn\u2019s-Cool2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Drawing on Anime, Arts Collective Blends Tokyo\u2019s Chaos and Brooklyn\u2019s Cool2\" class=\"wp-image-20630\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Williams says the point of opening an office in the U.S. was to blend the two different aesthetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cComing here, the concept was to bridge the gap between Western art and Japanese pop culture,\u201d Williams says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A drummer and producer, Williams was an out-of-the-box choice to run a creative agency. Even Williams found the choice hard to believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt this point, I was making my living as a session musician,\u201d Williams remembers. \u201cSo this job was totally outside the area I was in. When the CEO said to me, \u2018I want you to run this company,\u2019 I said, \u2018I don\u2019t know about that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/04\/Drawing-on-Anime-Arts-Collective-Blends-Tokyo\u2019s-Chaos-and-Brooklyn\u2019s-Cool4-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Drawing on Anime, Arts Collective Blends Tokyo\u2019s Chaos and Brooklyn\u2019s Cool4\" class=\"wp-image-20632\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But he loved Japanese culture, having visited the country \u201cmany, many times\u201d during his music career. So he said yes, serving as the sole U.S. employee of a company that is a \u201cmuch larger operation\u201d in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He joined the company in 2014. One of his most important tasks was finding an office. Like a lot of other companies opening their first office abroad, Kotobukisun opted for a WeWork space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause I live in Fort Greene and Utamaro was living in Williamsburg, we needed an office,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen I started looking at spaces, I heard about WeWork.
