In December, I splurged on a session with a career coach who delivered a sky-high ROI in one sentence: \u201cYou need to start saying \u2018no\u2019 to anything that isn\u2019t a \u2018hell yes.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, I tentatively embraced this manta. Three months later, the results have been terrific. I find myself at my desk writing and sending emails late at night because it\u2019s fun<\/em>. I realized that the major career pivot I was planning was not a \u201chell yes!\u201d at all, so I scrapped it. Now I\u2019m in the research phase of a side hustle that I\u2019m so excited about, I keep finding loose pieces of paper around my apartment with ideas I\u2019ve scrawled down as they came to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Hana Ayoub<\/a>, a life coach based out of WeWork West Broadway<\/a>, \u201c\u2018hell yes!\u2019 has merit not only as a professional framework, but also as a benchmark to consider as you look at your day. Is your calendar filled with hell yeses? This could be something that transcends into all areas of our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Examples: if an article of clothing isn\u2019t a hell yes, \u201cDon\u2019t buy it,\u201d Ayoub advises. \u201cIf you\u2019re moving forward in a dating relationship, is it a \u2018hell yes!\u2019 for you?\u201d she asks. \u201cConsider the people you surround yourself with. Use \u2018hell yes!\u2019 as a lens to consider all the options you have, career and otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lou Leone is a WeWork Fulton Center<\/a> member and founder of Leadinary<\/a>, a management consulting and executive coaching firm for startups. Leone recognizes that \u201cSaying \u2018no\u2019 to things is hard. This all takes some faith. You need to get really clear on what you authentically want. What does your \u2018hell yes\u2019 look like for you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greg Edelman, an account manager for the recruiting firm Premiere Onboard<\/a> has a litmus test for whether something is a \u201chell yes\u201d: \u201cWould I take this project, client, or job if the money didn\u2019t matter?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely important that you can say \u2018hell yes!\u2019 to the nature of your work,\u201d says the WeWork Fulton Market<\/a> member. \u201cIf you\u2019re not saying \u2018hell yes!\u2019 to a couple different things every day, stop settling for \u2018okay.\u2019 Get your \u2018hell yes!\u2019 opportunity. You can build a lifestyle around your passion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edelman isn\u2019t recommending packing up your desk, but rather, easing into taking \u201chell yes!\u201d steps in the direction you want to go in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saying \u201chell yes!\u201d is intrinsically rewarding, even when you start small. When you\u2019re able to shift what doesn\u2019t excite you off your plate, you have room to say \u201chell yes!\u201d to things that really move you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is a sense of autonomy that comes from making more choices,\u201d says Ayoub. \u201cYou\u2019re being proactive; you\u2019re creating what\u2019s going on in your life. You\u2019ll feel more in control, happier, and creative at work because you\u2019ll probably be leveraging what you\u2019re naturally good at. Work doesn\u2019t feel as much like work. You\u2019ll be tapping into your natural talents, and what you do uniquely and like to do. It shines, and other people will see it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having a day full of \u201chell yeses\u201d isn\u2019t frivolous though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re tired at the end of the day, but we\u2019re going for the pleasant fulfillment of a long day, as opposed to the exhaustion and drain of working on things that we\u2019re not that excited about,\u201d says Ayoub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
