I arrived that day with a dog bed and some treats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OWLshares is based in Santa Monica\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/los-angeles\/promenade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Promenade<\/a>, which happens to be a dog-friendly office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/03\/At-This-Investment-Startup-the-Office-Is-Going-to-the-Dogs2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"At This Investment Startup, the Office Is Going to the Dogs2\" class=\"wp-image-20059\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was surprised by how many dogs there are in the office, and how much it encourages mingling,\u201d says Hayes. \u201cPeople come up and greet my dog before they even notice I\u2019m there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Scotch is more than a people magnet. He\u2019s actually helped OWLshares make some valuable business connections. For example, the company is teaming up with a web design firm that\u2019s based in the same WeWork space. OWLshares co-founder Ben Webster says it\u2019s because there are dogs in both offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t us, it was the dogs,\u201d says Webster. \u201cThey started sniffing each other, then everyone from both offices came out and started talking with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/03\/At-This-Investment-Startup-the-Office-Is-Going-to-the-Dogs3-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"At This Investment Startup, the Office Is Going to the Dogs3\" class=\"wp-image-20060\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That wasn\u2019t the only canine connection. The guys at OWLshares, which offers \u201ccreating investment choices for people who care about their impact on the world,\u201d also met the founder of a non-profit organization that operates out of the same WeWork office. They\u2019ve talked about working together on projects in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scotch isn\u2019t the only dog around the OWLshares office. Co-founder Andrew Smith occasionally brings in Winston, his very expressive bulldog. But Scotch, who recently celebrated his 10th birthday, has the charm and charisma that got him featured in this year\u2019s \u201cDogs of WeWork\u201d calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe has definitely gotten some attention because of the calendar,\u201d says Hayes. \u201cHe\u2019s recognized around the office.
