The key is to get up super early and get [stuff] done. People that get up early win board games.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citterman is the CEO and founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talonnllc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Talonn<\/a>, an executive coaching firm that helps clients identify their strengths and develop strategies to maximize their leadership potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lately, Citterman has been getting quite a bit done. She recently published her first book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/1940984270\/ref=rdr_ext_tmb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>From the CEO\u2019s Perspective<\/em><\/a>, a frank discussion with 20 high-profile CEOs on how they identify and hone future leaders. But she didn\u2019t always set out to write a book about leadership. In fact, her early career was focused on public relations, as well as travel and wine writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/03\/The-Executive-Coach-CEOs-Turn-to-for-Becoming-Better-Leaders2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"The Executive Coach CEOs Turn to for Becoming Better Leaders2\" class=\"wp-image-20026\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many people, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/seattle\/westlake-tower\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Westlake Tower<\/a> member was deeply influenced by the story of her parents, but unlike many Gen Xers, her parents are Holocaust survivors. The survivor archetype runs deep within her, or as she likes to put it, \u201cthe ability to thrive on struggle and embrace ambiguity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her father escaped Germany in 1938. That same year, at the age of 10, her mother fled Austria with her parents. On November 10, the day after Kristallnacht, also known as \u201cthe Night of Broken Glass,\u201d her father was arrested and taken to the city\u2019s central train station where he was lined up to be taken to a concentration camp. But instead of helplessly accepting this fate, her father approached a Nazi soldier and asked to be released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There aren\u2019t too many stories of Jews successfully negotiating with Nazi soldiers, but Klaus Citterman was different. He pled his case, and after a series of conversations (the abridged version), they let him go. \u201cAnd that\u2019s the courage I talk about,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s the DNA that makes me who I am.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so her passion for leadership was born, a passion that shaped her career and ultimately led to writing her book. Citterman thinks of her parents\u2019 beginning as the innate part of her leadership, and what she\u2019s learned along the way from mentors as the learned part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/03\/The-Executive-Coach-CEOs-Turn-to-for-Becoming-Better-Leaders3-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"The Executive Coach CEOs Turn to for Becoming Better Leaders3\" class=\"wp-image-20027\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the most important feedback she ever received was that listening is a super power, and it\u2019s a skill she brings to executive coaching. &#8220;&#8216;If you\u2019re talking\u2014you\u2019re not listening, and if you\u2019re not listening\u2014you\u2019re not learning,&#8217;\u201d she recounts. \u201cAnd it\u2019s only a matter of time before you say something stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her work as an executive coach, she kept hearing the same thing from clients. These CEOs and senior executives weren\u2019t asking <em>How do we develop future leaders?<\/em> They were asking <em>Where are these leaders?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>From the CEO\u2019s Perspective<\/em>, Citterman interviews leaders on how they define, measure, and develop leaders.
