{"id":19997,"date":"2016-03-03T15:21:24","date_gmt":"2016-03-03T20:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/?p=19997"},"modified":"2020-04-03T18:06:33","modified_gmt":"2020-04-03T22:06:33","slug":"taking-comedy-shows-from-the-basement-to-the-festival-stage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/member-spotlight\/taking-comedy-shows-from-the-basement-to-the-festival-stage","title":{"rendered":"Taking comedy from the basement to the festival stage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>In this biweekly series, WeWork\u2019s director of digital community selects a WeWork member to get to know better, sharing her fun findings with the rest of the community.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I saw&nbsp;Naomi&nbsp;Westwater Weekes&#8217; post on the WeWork member network about <a href=\"http:\/\/prettygoodfriends.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pretty Good Friends<\/a>&#8216; comedy night, I was so intrigued I had to reach out!&nbsp;Pretty Good Friends, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/boston\/south-station\">WeWork South Station<\/a> member, was co-founded in 2006 by Eugene Mirman and Julie Smith Clem, beginning as a weekly comedy show in the basement of Union Hall. Since then, Pretty Good Friends has grown to do anything and everything: producing \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.startalkradio.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">StarTalk with Neil deGrasse Tyson<\/a>,\u201d the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, web series, live comedy nights, and more. Read on to learn all about&nbsp;the executive assistant\u2019s favorite comedians and what she loves most about her job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So how did you get involved with Pretty Good Friends?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just a big coincidence, really! I was freelancing with WBUR (local NPR station) and working some other jobs, and I was introduced to Julie, the creator of PGF. Then I did some work for her, and I was offered a job! So it fell into my lap\u2014I didn\u2019t really even know such a job existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/03\/Taking-Comedy-Shows-from-the-Basement-to-the-Festival-Stage2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Taking Comedy Shows from the Basement to the Festival Stage2\" class=\"wp-image-20002\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How would you describe Pretty Good Friends to someone who is not familiar with the company?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a production company specifically for comedy. We produce a variety of things\u2014everything from TV shows to podcasts, radio, video, live shows, and comedy festivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s your personal fave project that you\u2019ve worked on so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Definitely the comedy festivals. We do the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival\u2014one in Boston and one in New York City\u2014every year, and it is a crazy long weekend of all these different shows that we\u2019ve been working for months to prepare with amazing, talented comedians and musicians. Just really cool people. And it\u2019s a huge adrenaline rush for those few days\u2014you get to see some great material. So festivals are my favorite, because it\u2019s a combination of the things we do in a few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you were stranded on a desert island, what comedians (and comedies) would you bring with you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh man! I\u2019ve always really enjoyed independent comedians, and I also enjoy comedy that makes fun of society a bit more. I absolutely love Chris Rock. I love comedians that tackle race and gender issues, where it\u2019s funny, but they\u2019re also talking about real stuff. I don\u2019t know if I would want that on a desert island!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of TV shows, I love <em>the Mindy Project<\/em> and <em>New Girl<\/em>\u2014I think those are my favorite TV shows out right now. For comedy specials, John Mulaney\u2019s I thought was really funny, Amy Schumer\u2019s comedy special, and we work a lot with Eugene Mirman\u2019s <em>I\u2019m Sorry (You\u2019re Welcome)<\/em>\u2014he came out with a nine-volume album, and it\u2019s so wacky and out there and hilarious. He has a whole volume in the CD that\u2019s him making up fake ringtones! I think some of my favorite comedians are people who don\u2019t filter out the stuff that you or I would be embarrassed to think about. They just go with it. Wanda Sykes also has some great comedy specials. So I\u2019d bring those.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/03\/Taking-Comedy-Shows-from-the-Basement-to-the-Festival-Stage3-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Taking Comedy Shows from the Basement to the Festival Stage3\" class=\"wp-image-20003\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s your favorite thing about being a part of WeWork?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I just like the vibe here! It\u2019s really cool that there\u2019s so much going on in such a small space, and such a variety. I just met a guy down the hall who\u2019s going to be sending me some music that we might end up using! And there are things that I never even considered that could be a career. People near me are working on a fitness app for disabled people\u2014just a lot of really cool stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Anything else we should know?<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I love my job! I don\u2019t have \u201cSunday doom\u201d anymore\u2014I don\u2019t mind waking up early to go into work on Monday because work is really fun. And we\u2019re a small company, which I enjoy because it means I get to do a lot of everything\u2014whether that\u2019s learning about the financial and legal side of running a small business, or brainstorming some fun projects, and then putting on the actual events and live shows.
