{"id":19801,"date":"2016-02-25T15:09:50","date_gmt":"2016-02-25T20:09:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/?p=19801"},"modified":"2020-03-30T19:26:50","modified_gmt":"2020-03-30T23:26:50","slug":"not-just-a-belt-guy-young-entrepreneur-builds-a-leather-empire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/member-spotlight\/not-just-a-belt-guy-young-entrepreneur-builds-a-leather-empire","title":{"rendered":"Not just a \u2018belt guy,\u2019 Upton&#8217;s Justin Kerzner builds a leather empire"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Justin Kerzner wants to get one thing clear: he\u2019s not a \u201cbelt guy.\u201d<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not a belt guy, I never was a belt guy,\u201d says the 25-year-old entrepreneur. \u201dI used to take shoelaces and tie them around my waist like a belt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how did Kerzner end up launching his own designer leather goods company, called <a href=\"http:\/\/uptonbelts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Upton<\/a>, six months ago? First of all, he knew he needed to upgrade from what he had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf I had to dress up for some reason, I\u2019d put on a super-nice suit from my parents, great shoes, great glasses,\u201d he says. \u201cBut my belt was some piece of [rubbish] from Banana Republic. Didn\u2019t really make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there weren\u2019t so many options out there for men who wanted something stylish, but sensibly priced. So a little over a year ago, he got the idea that he could make a better belt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/02\/Not-Just-a-\u2018Belt-Guy\u2019-Young-Entrepreneur-Builds-a-Leather-Empire2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Not Just a \u2018Belt Guy,\u2019 Young Entrepreneur Builds a Leather Empire2\" class=\"wp-image-19806\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After coming up with what he and his co-founders decided was a winning design, Kerzner\u2019s first step was finding a manufacturer. That was harder than he thought. He got samples from lots of companies where the stitching wasn\u2019t straight or the leather was poor quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For nine months, he went from one company to another, finally stumbling across the perfect one in El Paso, Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was kind of our last stop before saying \u2018[screw] it\u2019 and going to Europe, because nobody could make the belts the way we wanted,\u201d he says. \u201cWe needed someone who would hand stitch all the buckles on, but most companies won\u2019t do that. They want to use machines to do it. That one thing totally changes the look of the product.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With everything the way he wanted it\u2014the leather, the buckles, the packaging\u2014 Kerzner hit the road. And he means literally. He went from door to door to dozens of boutiques in New York\u2019s swanky SoHo neighborhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He got plenty of rejections. But then one day in early November, the manager of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lululemon.com\/stores\/us\/new-york\/soho-mens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lululemon<\/a>\u2019s men\u2019s store took one look at the product and asked him to return that Saturday for a pop-up display. That led to similar pop-ups in five other Lululemon locations around the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/02\/Not-Just-a-\u2018Belt-Guy\u2019-Young-Entrepreneur-Builds-a-Leather-Empire3-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Not Just a \u2018Belt Guy,\u2019 Young Entrepreneur Builds a Leather Empire3\" class=\"wp-image-19807\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/commons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Commons<\/a> member says these and other daylong events have been a boon for the company, whose sales are almost entirely online. He enjoys the marketing part of the job: heading out to stores where he hopes to forge partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s next for the company? Kerzner wants to expand the product line to include other leather items. Not a wallet, though. Too obvious. That will be the fourth or fifth product that Upton rolls out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, he\u2019s totally into belts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m definitely not interest in doing anything else right now,\u201d he says. \u201cI like the market we\u2019re getting into. We\u2019re doing things different enough, and well enough, that it will be tough for other people to compete. Anyone can start a belt brand, but to deliver and execute like we have, that\u2019s a real challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\"
