About 20 other people showed up and socialized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt allowed me to access my neighborhood in a way that made it feel more like home,\u201d says Heller, a member of Boston\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/boston\/fort-point\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Fort Point<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/02\/In-Boston-Making-the-World-\u2018Feel-More-Like-Home\u20193-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"In Boston, Making the World \u2018Feel More Like Home\u20193\" class=\"wp-image-19573\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Heller says that other participants apparently felt the same, because word began to spread. Just a few months later, more than 1,000 people gathered in a bar across the street from Boston\u2019s Fenway Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five years later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewelcomingcommittee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Welcoming Committee<\/a> plans events in 10 cities across the United States. The destinations range from nightclubs and museums to concerts and sports events. The types of functions are tailored for each city. Upcoming outings include a basketball game in Philadelphia and a music festival in Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heller says the point is to make sure there\u2019s a \u201ccritical mass\u201d so that people feel comfortable, even in an environment where they might otherwise feel a bit uneasy. He\u2019s in the Boston area, so the first example that comes to mind has to do with baseball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re 600 people among 37,000 at Fenway Park,\u201d he says, \u201cyou\u2019re just another group of people wandering around.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/02\/In-Boston-Making-the-World-\u2018Feel-More-Like-Home\u20194-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"In Boston, Making the World \u2018Feel More Like Home\u20194\" class=\"wp-image-19576\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But the impact on participants is powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo be seated among others who share your interest in baseball and to be holding hands with your same-sex partner is an exciting and fleeting experience,\u201d Heller says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to the power of community, Heller speaks passionately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat can mean a lot of different things to a lot of people,\u201d he says. \u201cFor some, it may mean a sense of safety and comfort.
