Levy serves as the company\u2019s chief operating officer. He\u2019s also the founder of Silicon Valley\u2019s NextGen conference, which brings together future startup founders and seasoned entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Levy\u2019s number one piece of advice for raising money for your own company? Ask for money, get advice. Ask for advice, get money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, it works. In fact, a few people who have given Levy money for his startup includes Gary Vaynerchuk of WineTV and Vayner Media; Keith Rabois of PayPal, LinkedIn, and Square; and Michael Dearing of eBay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not to mention, Levy was the inspiration for the opening lyric of Pitbull\u2019s single <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5jlI4uzZGjU\">\u201cFeel This Moment.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/inspiration\/advice-from-the-19-year-old-who-raised-1-million\/attachment\/pitbull-cory-levy-576x1024\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19480\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/02\/Pitbull-Cory-Levy-576x1024-571x800.png\" alt=\"Pitbull-Cory-Levy-576x1024\" class=\"wp-image-19480\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Crazy, right? So what is Levy\u2019s secret? What does he do that makes him so special? How did a 19-year-old raise $1 million for his startup?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the secrets of his success, in his own words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Come across as a seasoned veteran<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we started off in San Francisco, we weren\u2019t even raising money,\u201d Levy remembers. \u201cWe were just looking for advice on how to grow our company. After asking for advice from VCs and entrepreneurs, at the end of every conversation, they would ask, \u2018Are you raising money?\u2019 We\u2019d tell them no, and they would ask, \u2018Why not?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Levy says the response surprised him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were only out there looking for advice and people<em> wanted<\/em> to give us money,\u201d he says. \u201cWe realized pretty quickly that when you ask for advice, you get money, and when you ask for money, you get advice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By asking for advice, investors are automatically placed into the realm of a seasoned veteran. You can disarm people by showing them that you appreciate their wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/inspiration\/advice-from-the-19-year-old-who-raised-1-million\/attachment\/one-founders-levy-callahan\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19483\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/02\/one-founders-levy-callahan-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"one-founders-levy-callahan\" class=\"wp-image-19483\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Surround yourself with people smarter than you<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn order to be successful, you must surround yourself with people smarter than you,\u201d Levy says. \u201cBy surrounding yourself with people you aspire to be, you\u2019ll eventually become one with your heroes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Levi says this was his essential rule when building his company. It was his team\u2019s primary reason for setting up shop in San Francisco. Just as world-class venture capitalist Marc Andreessen says, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/pmarchive.com\/guide_to_career_planning_part3.html\">Go to the epicenter of your industry<\/a>,\u201d Levy agrees. That\u2019s why he realized it was critical to move to the Bay Area from the Midwest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI once overheard my co-founder giving advice to entrepreneurs in the Midwest,\u201d says Levy. \u201cHe said, \u2018You could grow a flower anywhere\u2014you could grow a flower in a garbage can. But if you had the option, you would rather grow it somewhere else, such as in a beautiful garden.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Get your hands dirty<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Levy answers without hesitation when discussing his controversial decision to drop out of college. With <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/blogs\/data-mine\/2015\/10\/27\/2014-graduates-had-highest-student-loan-debt-ever\">student loan debt at an all-time high<\/a>, young people around the country are questioning whether college is worth it. Levy is one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBusiness is a lot like playing a sport,\u201d he says. \u201cYou can study a playbook\u2014or go to class\u2014until you\u2019ve memorized every single detail of every single play\u2014or textbook. But where you truly excel is on the field. Unless you\u2019ve played the sport yourself\u2014or ran your own business\u2014 it\u2019s difficult to study the playbook\u2014or go to class\u2014and stay engaged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s unique about Levy\u2019s advice is that it\u2019s effective. The message is simple\u2014ask for money, get advice. Ask for advice, get money. It&#8217;s powerful, and quite frankly, it works. It&#8217;s transferable to other areas of life as well, such as, &#8220;Ask for a job, get advice. Ask for advice, get a job.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who knows?
