London nutrition coach says trust your gut"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When someone is a project manager for client-facing teams that do a lot of travel, it&#8217;s a given that there&#8217;s lots to juggle. For Taru Merikoski, who was living in Finland and doing project management for an HR and recruitment company, that lifestyle, combined with having chronic digestive problems, was \u201cnot pleasant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Merikoski, \u201cwhen your gut is not in balance, it drains the life out of you. Whenever you eat, your body pauses for the whole digestive process because it takes so much energy to process food. When it comes to energy, you\u2019re not left with much else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a dark time: \u201cI wasn\u2019t very active, outside of work, which made me feel worse,\u201d she remembers. \u201cI just barely managed the long hours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After seeing \u201ctons\u201d of different specialists, she was given the vague diagnosis of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/01\/What-Should-You-Eat-Nutrition-Coach-Says-Trust-Your-Gut3-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"What Should You Eat? Nutrition Coach Says Trust Your Gut3\" class=\"wp-image-18966\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI did all the nasty tests they could do, but nothing showed any signs of inflammation or anything that would be treatable,\u201d says Merikoski. \u201cI was just handed a huge leaflet listing about a hundred different foods that you\u2019re not allowed to eat if you have IBS.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merikoski was left to do a lot of experimenting, so she could uncover the right nutritional approach. And it was hard work (\u201clike banging your head against the wall\u201d). But it also sparked some ideas about what her new calling might be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she had the opportunity to move to the United Kingdom two years ago, it was the push she needed to make helping others with cryptic digestive issues her profession\u2014\u201cI started studying nutrition and I haven\u2019t looked back,\u201d says Merikoski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/london\/south-bank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork South Bank<\/a> member has three professional certifications in nutrition. Her company, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcticnut.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ArcticNut<\/a>, provides personalized coaching to people with fickle digestive issues. Her clients benefit from Merikoski having been her own nutritional guinea pig.
