In particular, YouTube has opened new spaces of possibility for entrepreneurs like Chris Hobbs, who started <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historybombs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">History Bombs<\/a>, an educational project that brings history to life through workshops, live performances, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/HistoryBombs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouTube videos<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI enjoyed history in school, but I found it quite confusing at times,\u201d says Hobbs. \u201cThere\u2019s so much going on, and you can get stuck in details and not know how it fits into the bigger picture. I want to give people a clear and concise understanding of the key events in an accessible and engaging way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hobbs, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/london\/aldgate-tower\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Aldgate Tower<\/a> member, was inspired by sources as diverse as Monty Python and Wes Anderson, and after watching the rise of YouTube during his time at university, he developed the idea of five-minute, single shot videos explaining history in a fast, fun way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to impassion people of all ages with a real curiosity for history,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt\u2019s only through an understanding of history that we can really understand the world as it is today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/01\/In-London-a-Casual-Conversation-Makes-History2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"In London, a Casual Conversation Makes History2\" class=\"wp-image-18939\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet behind the scenes of a YouTube video lurk complex legal issues many creatives don\u2019t anticipate. There\u2019s intellectual property, regulatory matters, and commercial contracts to consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where Peter Lewin comes in. He\u2019s an associate with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.purewalandpartners.com\/#welcome1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Purewal &amp; Partners<\/a>, a law firm based out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/london\/moorgate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Moorgate<\/a> that specializes in digital entertainment like video games, eSports, and, of course, YouTube channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe world hasn\u2019t caught up to the Internet yet,\u201d says Lewin. Therefore, \u201cThe laws haven\u2019t caught up to the Internet. It\u2019s hard because every country is different; it\u2019s hard to have a single set of rules everywhere. There\u2019s no YouTube law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hobbs and Lewin connected through WeWork. Purewal &amp; Partners founder Jas Purewal mentioned his firm\u2019s emphasis to a WeWork employee, who remembered it when Hobbs realized a lawyer might be able to help him understand a contract presented by a multi-channel network (MCN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRecently, we\u2019ve been approached by a number of MCNs to develop our YouTube channel,\u201d says Hobbs. \u201cWhen we were getting ready to sign a contract, we needed some legal advice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/In-London-a-Casual-Conversation-Makes-History3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/01\/In-London-a-Casual-Conversation-Makes-History3-400x571.jpg\" alt=\"In London, a Casual Conversation Makes History3\" class=\"wp-image-18940\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Lewin has always been passionate about digital entertainment, but didn\u2019t think he\u2019d ever get to work in that industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have any artistic ability or coding ability, so this was my way into an industry that I love in and outside of work,\u201d he says. \u201cSomeone out there needs to be reading and writing the fine print.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with their niche focus, Purewal &amp; Partners does business differently: most notably, they rarely charge hourly fees, instead charging by the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their natural partnership has benefitted both members\u2014Lewin is able to help those who create entertainment he consumes, while Hobbs is able to evade time-consuming legalese to further his own passion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not like we were trying to explain to them what YouTube was,\u201d says Hobbs. \u201cThey knew all about it, and how these contracts work, and where we should be pushing back and asking for more. Peter\u2019s been really helpful in breaking down those contacts and letting us know what we should be fighting for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Lewin, \u201cUsually going to a lawyer is not exactly everyone\u2019s dream way to spend an afternoon.
