He was hustling ever since he was a kid, and he was good at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt that age, you are a sponge, and it all sticks,\u201d says Hewitt, reminiscing over the days of spinning pizza and entertaining hungry guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supporting a restaurant at a young age, he learned a thing or two about hiring the right talent, running a business, and making people feel right at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He went on to study hospitality in Switzerland and opened a Spanish tapas restaurant in Williamsburg before the hipster heyday. The game plan was to \u201clearn how Americans run restaurants and head back to Europe.\u201d But things didn\u2019t go the way he had envisioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/01\/Spinning-Pizza-Takes-Mike-Hewitt-from-Barcelona-to-Brooklyn2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Spinning Pizza Takes Mike Hewitt from Barcelona to Brooklyn2\" class=\"wp-image-18899\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, he fell in love with his wife and embraced the culturally Brooklyn mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are adventurous, entrepreneurial, slightly fearless, savvy consumers, outside-the-box thinkers, pioneers, and visionaries,\u201d says Hewitt, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/new-york-city\/dumbo-heights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Dumbo Heights<\/a> member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hewitt and his wife even named their 5-year-old daughter, Marlow, after <a href=\"http:\/\/marlowandsons.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">their favorite Brooklyn restaurant<\/a> where they had their first date. While running his Williamsburg restaurant, Mercat Negre, they also operated a women\u2019s vintage clothing boutique in Greenpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the recession hit, and his restaurant business permanently closed, Hewitt shifted into a director role at a human resources agency. It wasn\u2019t long before he started his own recruiting agency, responding to the call of the entrepreneurial spirit within.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Hewitt and his former restaurant partner launched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onehaus.nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">One Haus<\/a>, a platform of resources for clientele in the hospitality and restaurant industry. One Haus provides access to recruiters who track potential hires for corporations and mom and pop operations alike, as well as consultants who provide food and beverage advice and digital support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/Spinning-Pizza-Takes-Mike-Hewitt-from-Barcelona-to-Brooklyn3.jpg\" alt=\"Spinning Pizza Takes Mike Hewitt from Barcelona to Brooklyn3\" class=\"wp-image-18901\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t rattle off r\u00e9sum\u00e9s and see if someone sticks,\u201d Hewitt says. \u201cWe need to do cross comparisons to see what talent different restaurants are hiring. So a lot of research is done in-office\u2014lots of interviews with chefs, mixologists, and general managers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though not all the recommended candidates might be actively looking for a new job, Hewitt views headhunting as an opportunity to propel people into a new career trajectory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re handpicking people who are currently employed,\u201d Hewitt says. \u201cSome people think it\u2019s poaching, but we think it\u2019s educating and giving them space to decide on their own. I always tell my recruiters, \u2018You wait, wait, and wait for the right set of waves.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company is quickly expanding with a satellite office in Nashville, where Hewitt\u2019s top recruiters are entrenched in the territory there. Next stop?
