{"id":18745,"date":"2016-01-20T18:33:15","date_gmt":"2016-01-20T23:33:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/?p=18740"},"modified":"2020-04-03T15:53:55","modified_gmt":"2020-04-03T19:53:55","slug":"sitting-down-with-austins-rising-cowboy-boot-designers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/member-spotlight\/sitting-down-with-austins-rising-cowboy-boot-designers","title":{"rendered":"Sitting down with Austin\u2019s rising cowboy boot designers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cTwo years ago, if you would have told me I would have been designing cowboy boots, I would have called you a liar,\u201d says Brittany Allen. \u201cI never really wore them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acumenbrands.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Acumen Brands<\/a>, Allen has designed cowboy boots that are a favorite among singers and politicians alike\u2014from Jon Bon Jovi,&nbsp;Jewel, and Cowboy Troy to Sarah Palin. She gets to work with country singer John Rich as a designer for his <a href=\"http:\/\/redneckriviera.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Redneck Riviera<\/a> lifestyle brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/01\/Sitting-Down-with-Austin\u2019s-Rising-Cowboy-Boot-Designers3-400x571.jpg\" alt=\"Sitting Down with Austin\u2019s Rising Cowboy Boot Designers3\" class=\"wp-image-18753\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Allen&nbsp;couldn\u2019t seem more different from&nbsp;Paul Hedrick, a country boy at heart who was tired of spending $400 to $600 on a good pair of boots. Inspired by Warby Parker and Bonobos, the Texas native started <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tecovasboots.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tecovas<\/a>, which sells high-quality boots at affordable prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These up-and-coming designers didn\u2019t just end up in the same industry\u2014they are both based out of Austin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/austin\/congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WeWork Congress<\/a> office. When we got them together to chat about their&nbsp;cowboy boots, turns out they had lots to discuss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"getting-into-the-cowboy-boot-design\"class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting into the <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>cowboy boot design<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How did Allen, whose fashion career began with an internship with fashion icon Betsey Johnson, end up in the rough-and-tumble world of cowboy boots?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After working on a project for the Fayetteville, Arkansas-based Acumen Brands a month out of school, the company asked her if she could sketch 100 boot designs in two days. They loved her work and hired her as a designer, at which point Allen immersed herself into the country-western world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty much eat, breathe, sleep once you get into the&nbsp;industry,\u201d says Allen, who has a master\u2019s in accessory design from the Savannah College of Art and Design. \u201cIt\u2019s all about cowboy boots.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/01\/Sitting-Down-with-Austin\u2019s-Rising-Cowboy-Boot-Designers5-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Sitting Down with Austin\u2019s Rising Cowboy Boot Designers5\" class=\"wp-image-18756\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYeah, it\u2019s just such a unique industry,\u201d adds Hedrick. \u201cAnd it\u2019s way bigger than people who are not part of it understand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Western boot market is approaching $3.5 billion, and it has been growing a crazy amount since 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBoots are almost always associated with fun things\u2014relaxing, music, football, concerts\u2014and it\u2019s funny because it\u2019s also an enthusiast category that people pay a lot&nbsp;of money for,\u201d he says. \u201cI never thought I would be in the fashion industry. I always considered boots to be unique because they are all kind of their own industry, and they\u2019ve had their own trends over time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Hedrick, \u201cCountry music has become the most popular music genre in the country, and we are seeing a lot of first-time boot-wearers enter our market.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/01\/Sitting-Down-with-Austin\u2019s-Rising-Cowboy-Boot-Designers4-400x571.jpg\" alt=\"Sitting Down with Austin\u2019s Rising Cowboy Boot Designers4\" class=\"wp-image-18754\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"starting-from-scratch\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Starting from scratch<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had no background in design, but I always loved it and wanted to be an artist as a kid,\u201d says Hedrick. When he started Tecovas, he decided not to hire a designer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u201cI had an idea of what I wanted and used inspiration from other boots I admired,\u201d he says. \u201cSo I gave it a shot. I definitely needed help from people who knew how to make boots in terms of turning what I had into something.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe good thing about Paul,\u201d says Allen, \u201cis that he wore boots and knew about boots before he got into the industry, but me\u2014I still don\u2019t wear boots\u2014I have to completely separate what I like and throw it out the window.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou still haven\u2019t been converted?\u201d Hedrick asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have pairs to wear, but I don\u2019t actively wear them all the time,\u201d says Allen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hedrick, who likes a more classic boot style, designed Tecovas boots for people like him. Allen, on the other hand, loves more innovative, fun, and fashion-forward pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have to think about your customer all the time,\u201d she says. \u201cI find myself listening to music I don\u2019t love to get&nbsp;the vibes going. The good thing about Western boots is that there is a little bit of something for everybody. There are customers that want \u2018blingy,\u2019 and there are customers that want good stitch patterns or high-heeled fashion boots.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/01\/Sitting-Down-with-Austin\u2019s-Rising-Cowboy-Boot-Designers6-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Sitting Down with Austin\u2019s Rising Cowboy Boot Designers6\" class=\"wp-image-18758\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think your brands do a good job of covering the wide spectrum,\u201d says Hedrick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allen admits that she has some help when it comes to designing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have a really hard time with men\u2019s boots,\u201d says Allen, \u201cbut I married into Western\u2014my husband was Cowboy of the Year in 1996, and my sister-in-law was Miss Rodeo USA\u2014and they\u2019ll help me out and give me guidance. Thank god, because there have been a couple of sketches\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hedrick learned from his biggest investor that feedback is the most important thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI started out doing trade shows,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen I was giving him an update, he didn\u2019t ask me how the sales were, and the sales were good. He wanted to know what I learned about my customers, my designs, what\u2019s good, what\u2019s bad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"finding-inspiration\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Finding inspiration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For Allen, inspiration doesn\u2019t come from anything specific: \u201cI\u2019ll go walk around the mall, I\u2019ll find the end of the internet, I\u2019ll look at existing styles from other brands and try to innovate something that\u2019s just as good. It\u2019s a lot of imagery, and then I actually <em>do<\/em> look at some trend forecasting. You look at magazines and images, the cover stories and trends, and then you look at people. You go to a caf\u00e9 and look around.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was my second biggest thing besides going to stores and seeing existing boots,\u201d says Hedrick, \u201cjust going to concerts and bars\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/01\/Sitting-Down-with-Austin\u2019s-Rising-Cowboy-Boot-Designers7-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"Sitting Down with Austin\u2019s Rising Cowboy Boot Designers7\" class=\"wp-image-18759\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2026even if you look like the weirdo because you walk inside and ask someone \u2018Why do you love those boots?\u2019\u201d says Allen. \u201cYou can really find inspiration every place you go. In the past two years, I\u2019ve done like over 500 boots.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve only done four, so\u2026\u201d says Hedrick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut they\u2019re a good four,\u201d says Allen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Hedrick and Allen have their dream customers in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChip and Joanna Gaines from the television show <em>Fixer Upper,<\/em>\u201d says Hedrick. \u201cIf I could get Tecovas on them, I would die a happy man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Allen, it\u2019s Miranda Lambert. \u201cYou can tell she doesn\u2019t just pick up any type of boot,\u201d she
