Workers at Etsy can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/249293\">take breaks in the meditation room<\/a>, and Pixar provides a cereal bar, swimming pool, and gourmet cafeteria at its campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not just about fun perks, though. What all these extremely successful businesses have in common is a strong company culture. This culture makes them distinctive, and communicates their core values to their workers. Many companies have followed suit, instituting their own unique culture in their workplaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your company culture is going to define your business. Once you realize how you want the world to see your company from the outside, and how it functions on the inside, you can start to build from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"why-a-strong-company-culture-is-important\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why a strong company culture is important<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It makes your company more attractive to potential hires. <\/strong>It\u2019s tough to find good help. If your company culture is appealing to high-quality interviewees, they will likely be more interested in signing on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/profile\/view?id=ADEAAAMVi4MBrfYQ7MACpPgcYYYxu99rjGOEi5Q&amp;authType=NAME_SEARCH&amp;authToken=W4BO&amp;locale=en_US&amp;srchid=907988341447900971811&amp;srchindex=1&amp;srchtotal=11&amp;trk=vsrp_people_res_name&amp;trkInfo=VSRPsearchId%3A907988341447900971811%2CVSRPtargetId%3A51743619%2CVSRPcmpt%3Aprimary%2CVSRPnm%3Atrue%2CauthType%3ANAME_SEARCH\">Michael Dunworth<\/a>, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapcard.io\/\">Snapcard<\/a>, his company\u2019s culture gives them a competitive hiring edge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a startup in San Francisco, all of our team could take their pick from Facebook or Google or whoever they want because they\u2019re all absolutely brilliant,\u201d he says. \u201cWe need to have a strong \u2018X factor,\u2019 which is the culture, to make it worth their while.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It appeals to young workers. <\/strong>Currently, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2015\/05\/11\/millennials-surpass-gen-xers-as-the-largest-generation-in-u-s-labor-force\/\">millennial workforce<\/a>, which is the largest generation in the United States labor market, is demanding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/millennials-want-a-work-life-balance-their-bosses-just-dont-get-why\/2015\/05\/05\/1859369e-f376-11e4-84a6-6d7c67c50db0_story.html\">an improved work-life balance<\/a>. If they don\u2019t receive it, they may just find another job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers must meet millennial expectations, and figure out tactics for attracting and retaining these workers. That\u2019s where a unique culture comes into play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It increases employee motivation. <\/strong>If you emphasize employees\u2019 quality of life with your company culture, it shows your dedication to them. Therefore, they\u2019re going to give you their loyalty in return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor existing employees, it\u2019s important that they feel supported and can maintain a good work-life balance,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/descahill\">Des Cahill<\/a>, CMO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samepage.io\/\">Samepage<\/a>. \u201cThere will always be days and weeks where there\u2019s tons of work to be done and lots of hours to log, but accomplishing our vision is a marathon and not a sprint, and we need our employees productive for the long haul.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It makes people feel as if they\u2019re being heard.<\/strong> When everybody contributes to your company culture, they all feel like they have an important part in the future of the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dunworth says that at Snapcard, there is no hierarchal culture, and each person has a say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile we have a structure with managers, we don\u2019t see it like that,\u201d he says. \u201cEveryone has a voice and everyone\u2019s voice is equally important\u2014whether you\u2019re customer support or whether you\u2019re VP of Engineering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"what-makes-up-your-company-culture\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What makes up your company culture?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Your values. <\/strong>Google doesn\u2019t just give out free meals and inexpensive massages because they\u2019re generous. They also do it because they believe in high employee satisfaction, and do everything they can to retain their workers. Every single one of your cultural practices is going to stem from your values. Determine what\u2019s important to you, and then show it through action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Your office environment. <\/strong>Are employees expected to come in and sit quietly at their desks? Or is there a culture of communication, where workers gather in communal areas to chat and brainstorm new ideas? Your office \u201cvibe\u201d is a crucial part of your culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dunworth says that at Snapcard, they have, \u201cmusic going all day, every day in the office. It\u2019s not blazing loud, but it\u2019s there. We find that most offices are like churches, and that creates a really stale environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How employees work. <\/strong>Do you want your workers to come in every day for eight hours, or are you OK with them doing their jobs from home?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not bound by people being at their desks 9 to 5 to get the mission done,\u201d Cahill says. \u201cWe want to empower our employees and trust that they\u2019ll get the job done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Your commitment to social issues. <\/strong>What does your company stand for outside of the office? Does it donate any portion of the money it earns to certain causes? Does it encourage volunteering? Millennials especially care about this. It\u2019s been found that one in three in this group will support companies based on their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagobusiness.com\/article\/20140325\/OPINION\/140329895\/corporate-social-responsibility-is-millennials-new-religion?CSAuthResp=1%3A47359258799853%3A519584%3A33%3A24%3Aapproved%3AA9770F1D20C9A3A540DC16E12B8062EE\">corporate responsibility<\/a>, and seven in 10 young adults call themselves \u201csocial activists.\u201d Pick some causes that you\u2019re passionate about, and emphasize them among your workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The perks you offer. <\/strong>Whether you\u2019re giving out free beer on tap to motivate employees to socialize after work, or setting up places to nap in the common area so that they feel rested throughout the day, perks are important. They make work more enjoyable, and show that your leaders are dedicated to a work-life balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"how-to-establish-your-culture\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to establish your culture<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Figure out your values.<\/strong> Once you recognize what values are important to you, all of your company culture will trickle down from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ask for employee input.<\/strong> Though you may decide upon your company values, there is no way they can be implemented without keeping your employees\u2019 opinions and preferences in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Test out different practices. <\/strong>You\u2019re not going to figure out what works right away. Instead, do some testing. Offer employees the chance for one-on-one meetings with the boss once a week to discuss any issues. Give them the opportunity to try working remotely a few times per week. Hold a happy hour.
