But then again with glasses, people need them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So the New York-based optical company weathered the storm. Today it\u2019s thriving, making custom lenses and frames. Native Ken Eyewear also retails for several independent eyewear designers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/inspiration\/at-native-ken-brothers-have-a-vision-for-the-future\/attachment\/dscf9723\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17984\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-17984 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/DSCF9723.jpg?resize=404%2C404\" alt=\"At Native Ken, Brothers Have a Vision for the Future\" width=\"404\" height=\"404\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ken means \u201crange of vision,\u201d which ties into the original idea for the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe name is more based around the fact that we do produce our own products in the U.S.,\u201d explains Tsiplakos, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/commons\">WeWork Commons<\/a> member. \u201cA lot of people don\u2019t realize that the better optics started in Upstate New York, like Ray-Ban.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is part of the reason that the company opened in New York\u2019s trendy Chelsea neighborhood. Many of his customers are in fashion, including designers and architects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey appreciate details and the step-by-step process that each product goes through,\u201d says Tsiplakos, \u201ccompared to the bigger corporations that mass-produce everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/inspiration\/at-native-ken-brothers-have-a-vision-for-the-future\/attachment\/chris_portrait2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17985\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-17985 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/chris_portrait2.jpg?resize=263%2C395\" alt=\"At Native Ken, Brothers Have a Vision for the Future\" width=\"263\" height=\"395\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tsiplakos and his brother always dreamed of starting their own company. First-generation Greek immigrants, both boys used to help out in their family\u2019s restaurants. Their father\u2014who came to this country with $1,000 in his pocket and no proficiency in English\u2014insisted that they go to college. But Tsiplakos had other plans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrowing up, I always wanted to do something on my own, because it\u2019s really the only way to really get somewhere,\u201d says Tsiplakos.<\/p>\n<p>Tsiplakos had a background in eyewear after working with an optometrist, so he knew that it was a rapidly expanding market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking with the optometrist was a real plus because I got to learn the whole backend of the medical aspect of the field,\u201d Tsiplakos says. \u201cThe cool thing about the optical industry\u2014it\u2019s one of the only industries that fashion and healthcare meet.<\/p>\n<p>Retail is an up-and-down business, especially with luxury eyewear. But a commitment to optics and people continue to drive him forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pretty passionate about optics, and I find it pretty amazing what a pair of lenses can do for somebody,\u201d Tsiplakos says. \u201cYou gain a lot of trust from somebody when you really make something of quality, especially with eyewear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Looking back, Tsiplakos recognizes the risks he took opening a business without any mass-marketing experience or a substantial client base. Native Ken immediately decided to open a brick-and-mortar store.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe day I opened the store, we had never made a sale before,\u201d Tsiplakos reflects. \u201cSo seeing how far we\u2019ve come, and then having a client base after a few years, it\u2019s humbling.
